I love this song for one reason. My wife was in labour with our daughter for 2 days, I was with her the whole time in the hospital and during breaks I\'d walk in the woods near the hospital while my wife was able to sleep. I\'d play this track over and over, just couldn\'t wait for our baby to come into the world, so many lines would make me so excited to meet our new family member. ( It\'s a bloody awful track in Counting Crows standards but just locks me into a touch but beautiful time in my life. )\n\n"The outside of everything\nTo the inside of you"\n\nI\'ll make sure I protect you but I can\'t stop the hurt in the world but I\'ll be here when it hurts most.\n\n"Nobody here gets a word that I say\nAnd the problems I\'m told,\nAre more than medical"\n\nThe doctors couldn\'t get my duaghter to budge, they tried everything reasonable before they committed to a c-section.\n\n"I got a friend from the new frontier"\n\nWe can\'t wait to start a new phase in our lives as 3 people.\n\n"I was in bed with\nThe girl at the end of the world\nShe says I\'m goin\' home\nAnd you should come home too\nI\'m at the end of a new frontier"\n\nWe just want to get through this with my wife and go home, cut off the old life of just us, move on to the life with 3 of us.

Doesn't that just paint the most incredible picture of constantly putting your dreams away and never chasing them down. Something we're all so guilty of, expectation grinds us down until we're just left with nothing but regret. Never get so tied down that you don't leave a glimmer of hope to chase your dreams not matter your age.

"dark satanic mills" is the name given to factories during the industrial revolution in Great Britain in the 18th Century.

I think the number is a reference to 6 million jews killed in the Holocaust , the vile Nazi regime was the culmination of the what industrialisation had become by the 20th Century, the concentration camps were factories for human slaughter on a horrendous scale. Mechanization and industrialisation, 200 years of progress and that's all what humankind had achieved, wholesale slaughter of its own kind.

Another of McCoy's anti dogma songs. A statement that religion and faith are something you feel within, it doesn't come from idols standing on platforms in front you. If you can't feel it within you then you can try all like to talk to statues, you'll never find inner peace and never see beyond the dream being fed to you by the priests. Wake up, feel it and you'll learn the real meaning.

To me it's about the Aztecs who would sacrifice willing victims to appease their gods. The victims would often consider their duty to give up their lives to appease the gods and do their part to help the civilization. The song has a very expansive feel to conjure up the incredible feeling of waiting until the last split second when the sun hits the horizon and the cutting begins.

Carl McCoy was raised a Jahovahs Witness by his ultra religious mother, he's always been an outspoken opponent of over zealous religions. JW is what is known as a "death cult", they believe only 10,000 will be saved on judgement day, the end time. The song is a preacher who is laughing at people like McCoy who've turned their back on the faith in search of spiritual meaning elsewhere and don't believe in the end time. It's about, the very well documented, fact that JW religion is very harsh on those who turn their backs on the faith, all family contact is cut and those who leave are cast out by everyone else but the faithful are told to keep "eyes" on those who've left to make sure they don't try to make contact.

To me it's about growing up, pain, deciept, hatred but you have to have one thing in your life that keeps you going, a hobby, a sport, a person, anything that you go back to that helps release all the stress. I believe Mr Vedder is very find of surfing as a hobby, so his escape back to better times is being free to literally ride waves. Others have ways to " ride their own waves".

I think there's something here that rings with every guy. Our mothers are the first person that influences our lives, more for guys than girls, but mothers are just people and they don't always make the best decisions. I loved my mum but she did things and made certain decisions for me that I now hate about myself, she cared about me more than life itself but now she's gone I can't talk to her about any of it. There's parts of this resonate with me more now my mum has passed away. Nice personal song that really shows Hetdields talent for a great song.

Never meant much to me when I first heard it at release time, but as I hit my mid-40s it's such a powerful song about regret and never trying harder to live up to your potential. Although from a positive point of view you need to catch it early and see what you can do to chaneg things for the better so you don't die later in life with quite so many regrets, a warning if you like to do your best to try hard to live and not just exist as other demand of you.

I love this track, we all have something nasty we know is bad for us but have to have it at any cost to our health or liberty, from the person that cannot stop eating junk food to the vile abuser who cannot stop themselves hurting others. It's a nice powerful song about "habit" and the mental reward system hardwired into our brains.

Two interpretations for me.

We all get those times in out lives where the world just won't leave us alone, the boss that demands progress, parents demanding you live a certain way, even the guy in the store losing his patience 'cos you can't find the right change to pay, it all builds up and up to a point where every tiny thing seems like a personsal attack on your sanity and you wonder why you're the only one of the planet that is under this weight.

There's also the alternative for me that it's something to do with whistleblowers in governments and corporations. Where you want to say something about some terrible injustice that's happening but why are you the only one who see's it? Why is everyone else ignoring it? If you say something they'll spread lies about you, try to tell everyone else you're going mad and you need to be put back in your place. Still you won't let it go but you don't know who to trust anymore and that inner struggle to do the right thing in the face of everyone else telling you that you're wrong.

It always reminds me of Lord of the Rings! Ha ha! Especially this part:

"A light that warms no matter where they’ve gone
They’re off to find the hero of the day
But what if they should fall by someone’s wicked way?"

The ring leads them, Frodo needs to prove he's a hero and there are so many trying to divert the main characters from the quest.
