Mumford & Sons – I Gave You All Lyrics 7 years ago
@[WestCoKent:27556] okay i did not know this and i love you for sharing your brilliance. You're right, it's simplified to a point where everyone can relate and give it their own meaning. But at the same time, your analysis is so epic and thank you for that

@[CandyRocker:27262] you're on some next level, "Elliott Smith" type shit, right here. And i really fucking love that. It's not what this song means to me, but that's a great in depth interpretation. Very powerful and thank you for that amazing input - even if i might not agree, (just because of my personal interpretation and opinion,) I love it. Much kudos to you. (And yes i love Elliott Smith, too; just as i love the Beatles and Paul and many others.)

Y'all being a little butthurt imo when interpreting this song but that's my opinion (don't get hurt by my opinion lol). But on the other hand -and this is very important, because i always stand by this- One thing i love about many musicians and artists is that they don't *tell* you what it means, so each individual listener can interpret it how they want to, and the music takes on personal meaning- and the song becomes much more than just a song, it takes on a life of it's own, with each individual person. That bring said, to me it reminds me of my love and me. He travels for work, sometimes gone for months in end, only coming back every other weekend (driving sometimes up to ten hours both ways), and to me, this song just reminds me of how dull my life is when he's not around. I do the same exact thing when he's gone as i do when he's around, but the difference is he's there. And let me tell you, that makes a world of difference. So, to me, it's about making sacrifice so he can continue his dream career, despite the negative effects on us both. The traveling won't last forever, but we will survive it, as we have time and time again. But that doesn't make the distance any easier. This song helps me express that feeling.
I'm not saying anyone is wrong or right. But tl;dr: this is a great song because of what it means to me. And it's greatly because of what it means to YOU. Either way, it's fucking great.

Is it just me or does this bit kind of sounds like maybe an addiction theme...? (Forgetting
All the hurt inside you've learned to hide so well
Pretending
Someone else can come and save me from myself
I can't be who you are)
Like hoping someone will come save you, but really only *you* can save you, from yourself. I mean, it *can* probably mean that, to many people, but that's probably not the writers intents here. It also could sound like a Suicide note, something left before deciding to leave this Earth. Even though it probably isn't. Just a little thought. These are all great examples however, of how this is such a great song: because it's so versatile, and that's a big part of why everyone can relate to it. That and all the real-talk. No bull shit, just honest human emotion. We've all thought about death- of ourselves, our loved ones, the ones we've lost...
I don't think he's saying he's a bad person or anything, only that he's human, just like the rest of us, and we all make mistakes. Almost everyone who gets the chance to say their last words to their loved ones always says, "please don't cry because I'm gone. Be happy for the time we had together." Or something along those lines. The bit about "don't resent me" - don't be mad that i left you, it wasn't in my control, or your control. Don't place blame, don't get angry (things that happen when grieving), just remember all the good things, try to be happy and thankful we had those. Let me live on in your memories, the memories of everyone's lives I've been a part of.

That's my two cents, hope it's helpful, or at the very least, a bit interesting. :)
