The Cat Empire – Miserere Lyrics 1 year ago
This has to be one of my all time favourite songs. Whenever I listen to it, it just makes me so emotionally happy. I know some people think it's sad, but I think it celebrates life. I think the lyrics reflect a moment when Felix felt an overwhelming appreciation for just being alive.

My guess is the white robe man is a reference to the double slit experiment which suggests things have the potential to be anything until you observe them, until you sit back and take notice of the life you have. The woman who can't remember her name might be a reference to people who forget how lucky each and every one of us are to simply be alive, they exist but really don't appreciate it.

Seen a sound, listened to an image, etc, I've always thought referred to experiencing things as more than what they seem at face value. Eg. if you close your eyes and listen it can manifest a visual experience, or like the time I saw these guys at the Melbourne Zoo and cannot separate the sight of bats taking to the nights sky with the music as they played Brighter than Gold.

Not by a God, not by a king... I am here, because a miracle's a whim... I've thought this section refers to the fact that no person gave us the right to live, we aren't here as part of some plan. We are here by chance, a fleeting moment our parents had, and nothing more. And the song is about appreciating the opportunity that we have been given.

Long live living, if living can be this!

That is the song in a nutshell. We each have a gift, the gift of existence. And we should appreciate every moment, every little aspect, that our life delivers.

This isn't a sad song, this song is an inspiration. It does make me cry, but not because of sadness. It makes me cry because I appreciate existing every time I hear it.

I've told my girlfriend, more times than she thinks I should have, that she must play this song at my funeral. Again, not because it's sad, but because I would want everyone to know that no matter what live serves up, I always say long live living, if living can be this.

@[drunk:26698] Bahahahahahaha, Bahahahahahahaha, Bahahahahaha. Looks like you're living up to your name my boy. Had a few have you? If a silly comment on a website affects you this much perhaps you should stick to crayons.

If you actually took the time to understand my REPLY, you would have realised that I was the one REPLYING. Therefore the asshole that REPLIED to your comment that I was mockingly referring to was, wait a second......

But good point about the obvious fact it took me ten years after reading your post to come up with something to say. Perhaps next time I should go off half cocked and say something really stupid.

I couldn't agree more with everyones positive comments on this song, it's up there with the best the roses ever did. I personally came across a live version before hearing Second Coming and for me that (live) version will always be superior to the studio version. If anyone is interested I found it on Youtube:

@[justadub:26667] I had to look into this one as well. The best explanation that I could come up with is that Squire and/or Horn actually meant "triptych" which is a set of three images often found in churches - ie. they had formed the opinion that certain images of angels in a church were called "triptic angels". Just a guess but it fits with the "gold-leafed" description.

@[brojaysimpson:26666] well said! I don't think any two people should ever feel totally complacent about their love, ergo a level of uncertainty is a healthy part of even the best relationship. For if do not fear losing your lover and you become complacent, are you really giving all you can to the one you love?

@[GOSHADEZ:26665] I tend to agree with you however I don't necessarily believe it's the "fear of people judging you for what you believe", rather I believe Ian is saying that despite that fact that people do actually fear all these things (eg. For every man a religion, Face everybody and rule) you should stick to your ideologies.

It's a small difference I know, but an important one. Your preface is that people may fear others for what they believe in, "in which case [they] don't stand up for it", whereas I try to put a more 'glass half full' spin on in and believe the meaning is "Understand that people will fear your beliefs, but you should stick to them anyway and be who you really are"; eg. For everything a reason, Forgive everybody and remember.

Regardless, I do like your take on it...

@[Matt:26662] Parry why limit it to just the stone roses/ ian brown era? 20 years later this is still up there with my favourite songs of all time. In fact the Roses entire first album would easily make it into my top 100 and not many artists can claim that, maybe Weezers Blue Album....
