Corpses In Their Mouths Lyrics

You tell lies, when the truth will do

You're the social chameleon
What on earth we gonna do with you?

Slip your neck into a rope
Show me a smile
You'd run a mile
Then you're free
So where's the goal?
Where's the style?
You want the dough

Got dead sea scrolls for you
And your women too

She's got corpses in her mouth
Still she's holding hands with you
It's cut like crystal chandeliers
I'll shine like diamonds in her ears

She smokes crack
It's off the beaten track

You're the social chameleon
Yes, you change to suit the people around you

It's like the waves that hit the shore
You cannot stand the force of law
Look man, I know it from your nature
Hit the deck as the creator

Got dead sea scrolls for you
And your women too

She's got corpses in her mouth
Still she's holding hands with you
It's cut like crystal chandeliers
I'll shine like diamonds in her ears

She's got corpses in her mouth
Still she's holding hands with you
It's cut like crystal chandeliers
I'll shine like diamonds in her ears

She's got corpses in her mouth

One of the most under rated tracks of the whole stone roses/ ian brown era. Im presuming its about the fake Wannabes and IT girl hangers on that he comes accross in the music industry, not sure about the dead sea scrolls bit ???

@Matt Parry why limit it to just the stone roses/ ian brown era? 20 years later this is still up there with my favourite songs of all time. In fact the Roses entire first album would easily make it into my top 100 and not many artists can claim that, maybe Weezers Blue Album....

Can't agree more. A beautiful laid-back groove. Understated perfection!

the title is borrowed from a quote by situationist writer raoul vaneigem. i think it's from the book "revolution of everyday life", but i could be wrong on that.

"People who talk about revolution and class struggle without referring explicitly to everyday life, without understanding what is subversive about love and what is positive in the refusal of constraints, such people have corpses in their mouths."

just checked, the quote is from the revolution of everydy life. vaneigem was a part of the Situationist International, whose philosophy reputedly was the catalyst for the may 68 paris riots, a theme which runs through the roses first album. also, "under the paving stones... the beach" is a situationist slogan painted around paris during the riots, among many other slogans.

When this song first came out I heard this song was about John squires from stone roses and their difficult relationship. The corpses in the mouth bit was a dig that his girlfriend at the time was also sleeping with other band members.
