@[dani109392:25446] made a good point, I’d first like to note. Anyway… I think that they are talking about those popular kids in their cliques “the social scene,” which is both fake and causing a lot of negative drama towards others, “the hate machine.” Then, they are talking about how they don’t actually matter nearly as much as they think they do, and that nobody really needs them. Another point to make is that Brent is singing in the perspective of the person who was bullied by the “hate machine,” which I think adds to the value of the song, because it seems like if there was a music video to go with this it’d be Brent standing up to someone or some group of people that were at some point jerks to him. Brent, please do. Also, in an ironic twist of fate, the song can also be interpreted as Brent going after himself… Maybe he’s calling himself out for doing these things to someone else, or doubting himself. Maybe this is the doubting of himself? Also, for my first possible point, he mentions that the "Nowhere kids ... wished you well," aka they wished good things upon whoever he is talking, and now they are "back and mad as hell" because this person being stood up to probably did something wrong to them or blatantly disregarded them. |

I think that Brent is saying that he doesn't know what will happen next Well, maybe if my arms were ten feet tall, I could finally reach that crystal ball and that he's saying he doesn't want to sit around and cower; that he'd rather take risks I could stand behind my barricade Do what I'm told and be afraid to change My weapon of choice is I'd rather be dangerous And that nobody (including us, the listeners) should be afraid to be ourselves, or take risks I own my story I won't say sorry And neither should you |

At first, before reading the actual script or whatever here, I thought that it was ... A suicidal maniac with nothin' to lose But wait, exception to the rule, 'cause everyone of us is expendable I originally interpreted this part of the song as possibly a reference to some person who committed a shooting or something and it was saying that because of what they were going through, we were they were an exception to a rule of not hurting people, and we didn't matter (hence the violent action)... If any of that makes sense. I just find it funny that people can hear completely different lyrics and make sense out of them that fits with the general theme of the song. |
