Taylor Swift – Fortnight Lyrics 1 year ago
On “Fortnight,” Taylor Swift talks about how complex relationships are and how severe the consequences can be if emotions are left unresolved. I’ll rate the song 8/10 for its candid songwriting and strong vocal performances.

Ed Sheeran – Magical Lyrics 2 years ago
There’s something genuine about this track. From the instrumental to the lyrics, this record does a great job of capturing the warm and fuzzy feeling of being in love. Ed Sheeran and Aaron Dessner did well on “Magical,” and I’ll rate their effort a 9/10.

Ed Sheeran – Blue Lyrics 2 years ago
It hurts to bottle in feelings so maybe Ed Sheeran is right about silence not being so golden. The lyrical work on “Blue” is top notch but the performance is not quite as good. Hence, the song is probably one that would be skipped more time than replayed. I’ll score it 6/10.

Ed Sheeran – Punchline Lyrics 2 years ago
Letting go of someone you truly loved is one of the hardest things on earth, so I understand why he ultimately made the choice to keep pursuing the woman on “Punchline.” The performance of this track is not quite thrilling though, so I’ll only score this one 6/10.

Ed Sheeran – Amazing Lyrics 2 years ago
“Amazing” is a relatable tune that portrays what it’s like to fighting am unspoken battle without the support of loved ones. It’s a story well told by Ed Sheeran, although the performance doesn’t quite bring out the emotions to the highest level. I’ll score it a 7/10.

Ed Sheeran – American Town Lyrics 2 years ago
“American Town” has a nice pace and sound to it that makes it instantly catchy. Perhaps Ed Sheeran exaggerated the relationship between the lyrics of this track and the show “Friends” for commercial purposes, but that doesn’t detract from the quality of this 8/10 track.

Ed Sheeran – The Day I Was Born Lyrics 2 years ago
As someone who has feel alone and unloved on one too many birthdays, I resonate with the lyrics of “The Day I Was Born.” I don’t think the delivery quite matches the emotions of the lyrics though, so I’ll only score this a 6/10.

Ed Sheeran – Spring Lyrics 2 years ago
Ed Sheeran searches for something to fuel his hope on “Spring.” The track plays out nicely, although it feels like one of the more forgettable tracks on the album. The instrumental doesn’t quite hit as well as it needs to, so I’ll only score this 6/10.

Storytelling is central to this new album and Ed Sheeran tells another engaging story on this track. It’s a reminder that we shouldn’t be quick to judge people who indulge in vices without understanding what tribulations informed their decisions. I’ll score this one 8/10.

Juice WRLD – Come & Go Lyrics 5 years ago
Come & Go had such a big surprise element to it because of the heavy guitar work! I definitely was not expecting it and it makes it a unique and catchy song. I also really enjoy the upbeat rhythm of this song. The lyrics are meaningful and have a profound meaning. It talks about how quality relationships don't always come and the importance of not making any mistakes that could ruin something so perfect. In life we all make mistakes and sometimes we mess up a great relationship. The heavy guitar in sync with the lyrics really brings emotion and nostalgia to me. This collaboration of Juice WRLD & Marshmello is absolutely spectacular!

Halsey – You Should Be Sad Lyrics 5 years ago
“You Should Be Sad” is heartbreaking yet empowering at the same time. Halsey sings about a lover who isn’t part of her life anymore, and it sounds like it’s for the best. Most of Halsey’s fans assume that this song is written about her on-and-off-again ex-boyfriend, G-Eazy. The lyrics are sad and stinging at the same time; you can feel Halsey’s simultaneous heartbreak and frustration. It seems like this song is about how people’s true colors come out in relationships, and how selfish, hurtful people deserve to have their behavior called out. She sings about the trauma of being with someone like that, and expresses this in the line “I had no warning about who you are.” In this song, Halsey owes it to herself to let the world know how badly she was treated. Her ex doesn’t deserve to get off without any consequences, so she’s going to make sure he doesn’t.

One of my favorite lines in the song is “no, you're not half the man you think that you are… and you can't fill the hole inside of you with money, drugs, and cars.” This lyric feels like Halsey is taking her power back. She’s letting the entire world know that she’s aware of her true worth, even if her ex isn’t aware of his. He thinks too highly of himself, and he values material possessions more than people. No matter how much of that extravagant lifestyle he consumes, he’ll never be able to fill the Halsey-shaped hole in his life. He has something missing from himself, and Halsey points out that he’ll never be able to find it living the selfish life that he’s living. She drives this point home with the lyric “I'm so glad I never ever had a baby with you, 'cause you can't love nothing unless there's something in it for you.” This line cuts right through the heart of the issue; this man is selfish and self-absorbed, only caring about himself and his needs. Halsey’s choice to make sure he knows she would never want to carry his child is perhaps the most powerful expression in the entire song.

Halsey further exposes her ex-lover’s issues with the lines “oh, I feel so sorry, I feel so sad. I tried to help you, it just made you mad.” This implies that Halsey tried to help her ex see the parts of himself that were unhealthy, and he reacted in anger and defensiveness. If he truly lived a life obsessed with money, drugs and cars when they were together, it makes sense that Halsey would try to motivate him to become a healthier person. She tried to help him, and he wouldn’t receive it. Personally, I love this attitude of “you hurt me, and people need to know who you really are.” I think far too many ex-lovers treat their significant others with no respect or kindness, and G-Eazy totally deserves this diss track of sorts. The music itself is beautiful, the lyrics are biting and powerful, and Halsey’s vocals deliver an emotional performance.

Pearl Jam – Dance of the Clairvoyants Lyrics 5 years ago
The song title is reminiscent of a shamanic ceremony accompanying a life transition. Generally, the lyrics convey a sense that opportunity is fading, that we’ve lost, or are losing, what we once perceived as stability and have become confused, having lost purpose and meaning. Because of our confusion, we are restless. We are at a cultural crossroads of choosing fear or love, regressing under the lull of temporary comfort or growing in the fire of cultural catalysis. We are looking for easy answers and coming up empty. We are a culture under reckoning.

Society is under such commotion that we are desperate to feel any sense of control, and we are stuck in a sort of fear-anxiety feedback loop whereby we feel the reigns of reality being tugged away by an undercurrent of existential dread.

The narrator is acknowledging a sort of Machiavellian egotism fanned by the flames of the “temporarily-embarrassed” rich man. A man so caught up in potential glorification that he ignores those needing help.
The narrator is picking himself up after taking stock of his unfortunate situation. He is describing acknowledging his negative circumstances as positive because that acknowledgment is the first step toward finding a remedy.

The narrator is criticizing perfectionism because perfectionism has failed. “One day” is here, and we find ourselves looking around realizing our failures as humans, our failure to love and recognize ourselves in others. Our collective humanity is slipping away, and we have nothing to show for it. We are looking for meaning in supernatural phenomena because 2020 feels like a dark time of transition. It feels as if we are at a cultural dead end and that the only way out is full-scale re-enchantment. A clairvoyant is one who possesses otherworldly knowledge or abilities. The narrator is looking for something new and fresh and without the baggage of the day-to-day grind, reminiscent of Chris Cornell when he finds freedom in what “doesn’t remind” him of anything.

The narrator also acknowledges the sacred feminine. Women can sometimes have a knack for making the best of their situations, whereas men may sometimes be more confrontational and barbaric.
We find many expressions of dancing away circumstance today: addiction, denial, seeking.

We are warned to “stand back when the spirit comes.” This indicates that the spirit has left, or at least we have become estranged to the vivifying force of spirit. Spirit is also traditionally represented as a feminine force. “Stand back when the spirit comes” implies that we have lost our way. We are devaluing the human experience by constantly commodifying it. We are looking for ways to monetize what was once a passion, and we are left passionless. This is reminiscent of St. Vincent asking “what’s the point of even sleeping? If I can’t show it, if you can’t see me.” We have become locked inside mazes of our own design and of our own desire. Stand back when the spirit comes.

Eminem – Godzilla Lyrics 5 years ago
“Shady’s back! Back again!” Last Friday, we got the release of a surprise Eminem album entitled Music to be Murdered By. The cover and theme draw on the work of Alfred Hitchcock. Dare I say, this is one of the best releases we’ve gotten from Eminem in years. There is crisp and interesting production that coincides well with Em’s brash, quick flow. Lyrically Em is back to form with potent wordplay and double entendres.

One of the best songs on the release is the track “Godzilla,” which featured the late JuiceWRLD. The track is a great example of the album overall. The production is hard-hitting yet light, allowing Em to float on top of the best with ease. He uses classic, fast-Eminem flow, rapping at lightning speed with skill and dexterity that only Em can deliver. You will likely have to look up the lyrics to see what he’s actually saying due to the speed at which he’s rapping.

Content-wise, it’s a classic “flex” song. Em is bragging about his lyrical skill and proclaiming himself to be a “monster” at what he does. Juice WRLD chimes in with a great, catchy, melodic hook that really brings you in and reminds you why he will be so missed.

There are also moments where Em explores the “monsters” within himself. He says, “I’m beginning to feel like I’m mentally ill.” It’s a small glimpse into the mind of a man who has made a career of being controversial and a shock-master. All in all, it’s a great track and a welcome return from one of the best to ever do it.

Eminem – Darkness Lyrics 5 years ago
Eminem dives deeply into his personal life in “Darkness.” Firstly, Em sings “I don’t want to be alone in the darkness,” which is the hook of the song. I believe he is signifying that he feels isolated by the expectations of both the media and his fans to live up to his prior reputation as one of the best rappers of all time. Every album that Eminem releases gets subjected to heavy criticism because he is competing with his prior work, which many consider to be masterpieces.

Eminem’s uses a metaphor to relay his feeling that his fans are his own worst enemy. Em raps about being alone in his hotel room before a show. He gets paranoid and nervous that none of his fans will attend and that the media will take advantage of the opportunity to soil his reputation. He metaphorically open fires a gun on the crowd and media below out of anger and paranoia. This is consistent with Em’s history of using the modalities of violence and shock factor in his story telling, which many rappers have imitated. This also signifies that Em is feeling the intense scrutiny of both his fans and media criticism, which are beginning to push him over the edge.

Eminem’s “Darkness” is an expression of total isolation and solitude, which has been a common theme among the rich and famous throughout history. I believe that Eminem is expressing that he has been placed on a pedestal, and has therefore been raised to a status where he is in total isolation. As the phrase goes, “It’s lonely at the top.” Eminem concludes the song with audio of an array of news reports of recent shootings in the United States. I believe that Eminem is making a political statement about gun control and the need for reform in the United States.

Lady GaGa – Shallow Lyrics 7 years ago
Shallow by Lady Gaga really pulled on my heart strings for several reasons. For me, this is a song that everyone can relate to at some point in life. Change is scary, and the bad times can really make us question our own sanity.

“Aren’t you tired trying to fill that Void.” ~ When we are down and out, it can be easy to chase rainbows that never exist. A void is most often felt when you’re not happy about something in your life. As a result, change needs to happen.
Shallow takes me back to my first journey to the United Kingdom. As a writer this was a dream opportunity, but it was much more than that. The void within myself was calling for change.

I knew I had to make that change or I would always “fear myself.” Just like Gaga mentions in this song, I dove in deep and found my everything in this far away land.

Life can feel shallow… It can become very mundane. People do not dream, and change is way too scary. Because I took that chance and decided to make a change, I found my soulmate. Not only that, I also found strength within myself to go for my dreams and never give up.

Shallow by Lady GaGa makes me reminisce about the journey I traveled not only for love, but also to find myself. Change is hard, but sometimes you have to dive in head first and get as far away from the shore as you can. This will allow you to fight your way back and hang on to the change that you find within yourself along the way.

Taylor Swift – Ready For It Lyrics 8 years ago
The feeling on this is certainly more poppy and upbeat than look what you made me do. I wonder if "the games" is another branch to this seemingly vengeful attitude she has taken with lwymmd, or if it's just supposed to be a fun thing.

I certainly hope the latter. I love the emotion Taylor puts into her songs, but I'd honestly rather hear about heartbreak than I would petty fights.

Kendrick Lamar – Humble Lyrics 8 years ago
@[ybbob:19634] it's hard to say. I can see that. The imagery at The Last Supper shows them clowning a bit, but it's also during the chorus when he says sit down and motions to the guy who stands up at the table. I think this is just one way Kendrick is showing all the various different vain/showy things going on around him. It is interesting that towards the end you see everyone moving away, leaving just him.

Did anyone else notice the medical mask on the woman who was counting the money?
