| Troye Sivan – Heaven (feat. Betty Who) Lyrics
| 8 years ago
|
This song deals with the internal identity struggle of LGBTQ+ people. Society, for a long time, has preached that gay people are sinners and that homosexuality is wrong. Internalized homophobia is a thing that most gay people deal with. It's not wanting to turn your back on your beliefs or roots, but not wanting to or even being able to change yourself fundamentally.
In addition to this, 'Heaven' can have more than one meaning. Heaven is a perfect place. Traditionally, this perfect place is somewhere humans can go after they die, so long as they either are not sinners or have atoned for any sins they may have committed. The alternative is hell. However, a "perfect place" can be defined differently. Perhaps, in this song, being with the one you truly love is Heaven.
In a roundabout way, Troye does a really amazing job of portraying the struggle between what you have been taught and how you truly feel. What is Heaven to you? And if you have to sacrifice an essential piece of yourself in order to reach it, is it worth it? |

Troye himself confirmed that the line 'counting to 15' is a double reference. Troye was 15 when he came out for the first time. He also counts to 15 when he feels anxious as a coping method. |

this song is about sadness (possibly even depression) and how that can affect you and the people around you. someone has witnessed their loved one's decline into sadness, this loved one pushes people out and is overall quite distant. however, the song is about sticking with your loved one through their darkest hour and doing anything in the world to make them happy again. this person serves as the sad one's relief and hope for better times. |

It seems like the narrator is struggling with something. Perhaps they've suffered from loss or mental illness, and it seems that everything around them is collapsing. However, the presence of another person (this could be a friend or a lover) is what is keeping this person afloat. As long as they are by your side, the terrible things in your life suddenly seem manageable and like everything will be okay. |

It is about seeing someone who broke your heart. You've missed them to the point of losing sleep. You see them again, and they seem perfectly fine. They interact with you as if they've forgotten the history you share. I can't tell if this ex wants to hook up or just be friends, but either way, it's clear to the narrator that they are both out of touch with each other's feelings. They're fine, they don't seem to have lost sleep over you, and you realized that your missing them is a waste, because they don't miss you. |

It is about having to see an ex after you've broken up. You can't shake the memories of the love you shared and you're hoping that upon seeing each other, they'll come running back to you, but the other person appears to have moved on, much to the dismay of the narrator. |

The song is about nostalgia for your first love, the first time in your life you experienced reciprocated love, however fleeting it was in the grand scheme of your life. The relationship is long over, you're a different, more mature person now and you've most likely had a few more relationships since then. But it was still your first love. |

person A screws up really badly, causing person B to pack up and leave in a heartbroken rush. now person A is feeling guilty and wants to make it clear to person B that they're sorry and wants to make it up to them. but presumably, person B has cut all ties and it's now too late as person B is well out of person A's life. |

this song makes me cry every single time. it's a conversation.
first verse: person A and person B have gone through a lot clearly. they've strived to remain together in the face of aversion and difficulty. they're being kept apart, maybe due to a career or some other factor that doesn't allow them to be together. they're questioning if whatever is keeping them apart is worth it anymore, even if it impassioned them at some point. person A 'would give up everything' if the other person decided that their love was more important.
chorus: "for your eyes only" implies that what they share is intimate, a secret. but it's okay because they have each other. even if no one else in the whole world understands or knows or sees, it's okay because they do.
verse 2: whatever they've gone through, it's damaged them emotionally and/or mentally. they've hidden their "scars", bit their tongue, and kept going. person B is saying how person A is the only thing that helps them relax and makes them feel better, like they don't have to hide their "scars" anymore and that they don't have to hide themselves anymore. feeling release, at ease after a great deal of pain. the beginning of the verse is very raw and emotionally intense.
bridge: the EMOTION during this part is so raw and clear to the point where you feel it too. the pain, the difficulties, the stress, the longing. the end gets quiet though, and you see the person concluding that despite all that they've been through, they feel that it was worth it just to be together and they hope the other person thinks it was worth it too and won't leave them after all they've been through to make their love work. |

liam said himself that the song is about 1D's career. it's their anxieties about the future of the band, since they were so successful they fear they can't get any bigger and thus, everything just might collapse. they're reflecting on what they could've done instead to ensure a more clear future for themselves. |

many have interpreted this song as being about coming to terms with one's sexuality / romantic orientation / gender, and finding solace and validation for their sexuality / romantic orientation / gender in another person who "feels the same". it's realizing that you're not weird and that you're not alone in this world by means of representation in another person. |

it's about the band itself, their friendship.
they're reminiscing on the great times they've had together, having a good drink and a good laugh and wanting to pause this moment of the bliss of being surrounded by loving friends.
i read somewhere that it's the "aftermath of their careers" or just before they depart for break. they want to break clocks and forget about time because they're feeling a sense of not wanting to leave what they've achieved and the memories they've shared behind. |

it's for zayn. in the first verse, you can see that the person asking "do you believe i'll never be too far?" is nervous about losing friends. the song is a conversation, reassuring that no matter how far away, they always be there for each other and support each other in spirit. there's an understanding, a sense of forgiveness, a sense of nostalgia but also hope.
"you'll find me in the region of the summer stars", aka LA, aka where zayn ran off to and spent lots of time shortly after leaving the band.
"yesterday, i went out to celebrate the birthday of a friend, and as we raised our glasses up to make a toast i realized you were missing" is sung by louis. there's a photo of louis at liam's birthday party, the first in-band birthday since zayn leaving and he looks a bit sad. obviously, this is just a fan interpretation but i'm reminded of it every time i hear this line. |

not about a relationship, but about his career and life after moving out. it's all about nostalgia but also remembering wanting to leave "suburbia" and venture out and become something bigger. you can feel almost frustration that he'll never be free from "suburbia" ("where dreams go to die") no matter how big or successful he is or far away he moves, he'll always be attached to his childhood place no matter how much he may have disliked it or wanted to leave at some point. |

|
music video aside, i think it's about someone with poor mental health (depression, anxiety, or something else) feeling comforted and safe with their lover, or more, wanting their lover to comfort them and make them feel safe. however, due to whatever circumstances, the lover can't necessarily be there (maybe for distance reasons, maybe it's forbidden, maybe they broke up).
it's a sense of longing to be held and not be alone through dark times and in the presence of dark thoughts. |
