I think this is wavves talking to the fans. Nathan has mentioned before that he has a lot of people thank him for getting them through various hardships of life. I think if you read into the first verse you could get things like, death, depression drugs. Low life, your life Sharper than a hunting knife New sun rising up, filling up the empty cup This is them moving past their hard times, or gaining a new more positive outlook on life. The pre chorus and chorus are wavves speaking very literally to his fans. No idea what the second verse means though. |

| Harvey Danger – Flagpole Sitta Lyrics | 9 years ago |
|
I am sick of reading foolish comments about "it's all about society and outcasts." I am sick of cop-outs like "the song has a very non-literal meaning" Let's break this sucka' down verse by verse. "I had visions, I was in them I was looking into the mirror To see a little bit clearer The rottenness and evil in me." --Harvey is remembering himself looking in the mirror, whilst not stuck upon his flagpole. The "evil" in him, is the flagpole. "Fingertips have memories Mine can't forget the curves of your body And when I feel a bit naughty I run it up the flagpole and see who salutes (but no one ever does)." --He's thinking about different memories of his fingertips, because currently, his fingertips are really cold from climbing the flagpole. He wants recognition for climbing the flagpole, but no one ever gives it to him. "I'm not sick but I'm not well And I'm so hot cause I'm in hell." --He has no physical ailments, but he is certainly in a good situation (stuck on flagpole). He's getting hot now, even though he was once cold, cause the sun comin' out. "Been around the world and found That only stupid people are breeding The cretins cloning and feeding And I don't even own a TV." --Clearly a reference to him being able to see his entire neighbourhood (or "the world" as he puts it) and watching his neighbours fornicate through their apartment window. Only briefly, though. He's not a creepy guy, he just accidentally saw. He doesn't own a TV. "Put me in the hospital for nerves And then they had to commit me You told them all I was crazy They cut off my legs now I'm an amputee, god damn you!" --This is real important stuff. It's him envisioning an ideal scenario where he had opened up about his plans to climb the flagpole, and then stopped by the local authorities, through the amputation of his legs. But that didn't happen and he's sitting on the flagpole, now. "...And it's a sin to live so well." --Him simply making a sarcastic quip about his current predicament (stuck on flagpole) "I wanna publish zines And rage against machines" --Once he gets down, he wants to publish a tell-all book to warn others not to climb flagpoles. He is raging against bulldozers (machines) in the parking lot next door, that someone could use to help him get off the flagpole, but no one helps. "I wanna pierce my tongue It doesn't hurt, it feels fine" --Before climbing the flagpole, he thought about putting his tongue on it, cause he watched A Christmas Story one year with the family. "The trivial sublime I'd like to turn off time And kill my mind You kill my mind...." --He wants down. "Paranoia paranoia Everybody's coming to get me Just say you never met me I'm running underground with the moles (diggin' big holes!) Hear the voices in my head I swear to god it sounds like they're snoring But if you're bored then you're boring The agony and the irony, they're killing me!" --This is why he's up there in the first place. Everyone's after him. Everyone's coming to get him. The moles comment is an ironic statement lamenting his current situation (stuck on flagpole). The voices are himself, sleeping. He wants to sleep. He's very tired. But he's stuck, on his flagpole, and can't sleep. I think this song is truly tragic once you break it down to brass tacks. Hope he got down. Maybe he's still up there? Who's to say. I am. I know Mr. Danger very well and he confirmed to me this is all accurate. Thank you. |
