I love the instrumental version of this song, and I have actually left instructions for the song to be played at my funeral, as my ashes are being scattered on the water of the lake in Minnesota, where I have lived for 30 years. I especially love the beginning of the song, in how the clarinet has a plaintive, quavering sound. So haunting and full of emotion. |

This song makes me cry almost nonstop tears whenever I hear it - it reminds me of my first love, and the incredibly painful end of our relationship, which was about a year ago. We had been together nearly eleven years. I thought I'd never recover from the shock, sadness, regret, and frustration I felt, and I was actually considering suicide because I thought I'd never get over it. Even now I have no interest in dating or getting into a relationship, because I remember how much it hurt to have it end. I try not to think about it too much, but it's gradually getting easier. |

The first time I heard this song, it grabbed my attention because it so accurately described how I felt about someone I had recently met and had fallen for - very hard. I was in my early twenties, and had never been in love before...so the lines "till now I always got by on my own / I never really cared until I met you" were especially powerful. I really wanted to tell him how I felt, but I was so afraid to - and I never did. That terrible feeling of being torn is captured in the lines, "you don't know how long I have waited, and I was going to tell you tonight. / But the secret is still my own and my love for you is still unknown." Even now, almost 30 years later, I still get shivers down my spine when I hear this song. |
