Emilie Autumn – Swallow Lyrics 2 years ago
This meaning of this song is pretty simple, actually. It's a song about feeling overwhelmed by life and accepting that you'll have to take it on one bit at a time. "Swallowing" seems to be in reference to medication, since Emilie does have bipolar disorder iirc and has had struggles that have arisen because of it. I think she's saying "I'll accept this if it means I have a little less ocean to deal with". "Water" usually symbolizes emotions, which makes sense given that bipolar disorder is typically characterized by experiencing mania (reckless euphoria) and depression - a confusing mix of extremes. I think the idea that this song is about her mental disorder is confirmed by how she switches from berating herself ("all of my songs are pretty much the fucking same") to glorifying herself ("I don't want to be a legend - oh, well that's a god damned lie, I do") and then back again. At any rate, I can relate and often sing this song when I'm depressed.

Phantogram – All Dried Up Lyrics 8 years ago
To me it's about self-abandonment. It's about waiting for someone else to save you. It's about faith in someone, a faith so strong that it drags you toward them in hopes of finding closure. Your love is like a method of transportation from one chapter to the next. We are always in pursuit of love/joy and in flight from pain. Just because you forget what joy feels like doesn't mean you're still not looking for it. Or something. I can't quite be certain of what any song means. What it means to you is what's most important.

Xiu Xiu – Dear God, I Hate Myself Lyrics 8 years ago
I feel like this is a parody of modern Christianity, especially towards the end when he says "Flip off the mirror as protest. "Who the f-word are you?"". This is because it's "bad to swear" in strict christian households. Also, it's ironic that people got to religion to make them happier, but in this song he professes in prayer that that will never be the case for him.

So, in general, it seems to me that it reflects on how silly, strict rules can drive one mad in their longing for happiness.
