At first I thought this song was about climate change or war or something, but after a closer look and the attacks in Paris I´m pretty sure it´s about war and the dangers of our time. "We´re a broken people living under loaded gun" means that anytime there could be a war. It could also mean that fear has broken us, the fear of terror and attacks, and it can´t be outrun or anything. "When I close my eyes tonight / To symphonies of blinding light (...)Like memories in cold decay / far from the world of you and I" could either be that war happens all the time, but we don´t realise that because it´s so far from our western world, or maybe it is about nuclear war. "will we burn inside the fires of a thousand suns / for the sins..." could be the thousands of fights and wars that could kill us someday and that we are partly responsible for, or a nuclear war again. Given the time it was released, it could be much more, but I was just reminded of this song when I heard about what happened in Paris... and how we can all feel the loaded guns around us now. |

I think this is about a crisis in a relationship. Most likely a romantic one between lovers, but possibly also a friendship. They think they reached something in their relationship and take it for granted. They make lists about it (we sat and made al list) that was so long it fell down the back of the table. But in a relationship, you never really have something and when they fought, they lost it all and have nothing anymore. After that fight, they will never be the same anymore. At least, that would be how I would think about it.... |

Personally, I think it is about a couple. The speaker asks himself if they will stay together, if their ways will still fit together. But he doubts it(I turn back when I see where you go) and he isn't sure if the other one will live a good life (are you going to age with grace) and still be content with it. Still, he is mostly concerned if he stil, fits into this life (you always take it further than I ever can). But when I listened to it at first, I also thought it was about an adult and a child. |

I think this is about a relationship in which one person wants more closeness, but the other does not or cannot give that. So all they do is talk (words are all we have). One is content with that( I feel overjoyed when you listen to my words), but the other one feels lonely ( I hear you calling in the dead of night), like the person is lying next to the speaker at night but feels still lonely. He or she is desperate, but always gets rejected. Maybe one of them does not let the other come closer, for reasons of depression or something... |

The song is about realising something to late, for example global warming as was said before. They are standing on a wall, laughing, and don't see what is coming. Later, the catasrtophe comes over them (global warming, a war...) and they have to pay for their blindness and their greed. In the end, they are standing where they stood before. The dynamic of the song matches the lyrics very well since they are louder when the catastrophe has come and more quiet in the end. |

| I think it's about that sometimes, you need some space and some time alone to find what life holds for you (fire needs a space to burn) . The speaker looks back at a relationship that ended. He thought he did it all right ( I thought I kept you safe and sound, I thought Imade you strong) then "something made me realise that I was wrong". He learnt that you have to find your own place in life, and then you burn brighter (I can finally see your light). Now that he looks back, the speaker realises what he has lost, but for the other person it was necessary that he let go. | |

I just noticed I forgot some lines... " cause I can't see forgiveness and you can't see the crime": they are fighting over something. Either he wants to be forgiven, but the other one can't see the mistame he made, or, more likely, he cannot think he can forgive the other person. The other person cannot even see the crime. "we both keep on waiting for something we won't find/ for what we left behind": both are missing something in the relationship they once had or they will never find. Actually, these lines are quite important for the rest of the lyrics since they give a feason for the breakup |

I think this song is about finding your way home when you are lost, literally, but also metaphorically. The speaker asks himself how he can get back home again ( How am I gonna get myself back home?) . Home can either be your literal home where you feel safe and welcome, but it could also be who you are. In the next line, he says that he's been up all night and in the morning, he is trying to pretend he was home. In the literal sense, he has been away from home. In the metaphorical sense, he has been out all night, too, not home. He is telling himself this is just another night, like it is meaningless and unimportant. He will be cast out but still end up there again. I think "there" means somewhere or different places. When he is out at night somewhere in a bedroom that is not his own, it is dark there and there are his thoughts everywhere. When he is coming home eventually, even rhe birds mock and curse him. When he is away all night and pretending to be someone else, he can't find his home and his own self. I hope this makes any sense... |

For me, this is about the end of a relationship and how you finally see the real face of somebody. In the first line, the speaker expects the other person to break up ( tearing me apart) and although the words aren't said yet (words you wouldn't say), he knows what they will say (tearing me apart again). With this breakup, their future together ends ( tomorrow's moment washed away) because from now on, they won't meet again because one doesn't have the time and the other one doesn't have a reason. These two are more or less the same (a stylistic device called variatio, since the words are not exactly the same, but their meaning almost is). The chorus (the light on the horizon was brighter yesterday) refers to the lost hope for the future (light as a common symbol for hope). the next line "with shadows floating over, the scars begin to fade" expresses that ince it is over anyways, what you did to each other before becomes unimportant. "the final masquerade" is a metaphor: at the end of a masquerade, you put down your masks and everyone reveals their true face. that happens on the song, too, the singer can see now the true self of the other person, everything that was hidden before. the next lines are a flashback to the relationship an give hints why it had to end. they never were honest with each other (all I ever wanted the secrets that you keep, all you ever wanted the truth I couldn't speak). Again, the words are not the same but the meaning is. The result is that they lie to each other. Maybe that was the reason why they saw their true "faces" and broke up. I think this song sums it all up really well... |

For me, this song is about lying in a relationship. every time you lie, it hurts your relationship just a little bit, but later it will drown you (like the gray water the rain and finally, the ocean). But the little things still give you away, because what you do is still more important than what you say and the other person can guess you're lying ( I mean nothing to you, the little things give you away). The sounds in the song fit the lyrics really well, they sound like sonars from a ship (water again) |
