I think this song is about having a friend with depression. He can see her 'lean towards despair', and she relishes in the depression because 'any given opportunity you're there'. I think he sees how her behaviour is dangerous, and she's self-destructive, so he tries to help and talk to her about it, therefore when she does listen to what he has to say, he is 'overjoyed'.
indeed this song seems to be about convincing a depressed person to open up. I had to battle depression myself, and i remember one of the most striking features is how it makes one feel so lonely and unreacheable, because there is no way to communicate in words this very subjetive feeling of hopelessness. The temptation to simply isolate from the world and avoid misunderstanding is huge. Depressed people often suffer silently giving very few hints -- "The calling in the dead of night" is a metaphor for that, since the dead of night is a time where people are usually not paying atention to and only those who are awake can listen to subtle noises. A call for help from someone depressed is usually as subtle as that. The narrator sensibly sees his friend is in pain and worries about that. He still reminds us even though words cannot describe the whole human experience or express the entire suffering one may be through, they are still "all we have" to make a connection, a meaningful bond with others. Avoiding making that connection in a time of despair will bring no gain and the lonely person will always keep "falling off the fence that way".
maybe its about loneliness? be friends with something invisible and that friend usually comes in the middle of the night. maybe it means the lonely feeling strikes in the night. and he has this friend that he always talk with. the friends always listen to him and understands him eventhough its just his creation, in his loneliness he loves himself by creating his own friend
I think this is about a relationship in which one person wants more closeness, but the other does not or cannot give that. So all they do is talk (words are all we have). One is content with that( I feel overjoyed when you listen to my words), but the other one feels lonely ( I hear you calling in the dead of night), like the person is lying next to the speaker at night but feels still lonely. He or she is desperate, but always gets rejected. Maybe one of them does not let the other come closer, for reasons of depression or something...

I think it's told though a roommate's point of view. And the roommate hears their roommate call their clingy lover and the lover and the couple are always fighting and their really depressed. So the roommate that hears them helps them and talks to them trying to help them and when it helps their overjoyed.
I think that this song is directed at someone he's bullied previously and regrets it. 'I feel overjoyed' may be sarcastic considering how his words are 'crawling under [their] skin'. He's mocking himself for what he's done. This person is depressed and needs help, but he took a stab at them instead and he's saying how terrible of a decision it was. 'Words are all we have' is him trying to justify what he did and 'I hear you calling' is him finally understanding that this person needs help.
He can tell this person is depressed or calling out to be understood. He trying to understand he sees that what he's saying is being accepted maybe due to the person's facial expressions and or disposition and that makes him happy but he has to keep dealing with what often leads to misunderstanding and a starting all over again. He could be trying to give advice but offense is taken.
