I always heard this as quite a dark song, partly because I misheard a key line. Instead of “as an old enemy” I heard “as I know you’ll never be”. The interpretation I have is that here is a person impelling the other to come “as a friend” but actually hating them, obsessed by them, and preparing to shoot them. “As an old enemy” still fits, but not quite as well. “Come as you are, as you were As I want you to be” “Come doused in mud, soaked in bleach As I want you to be” Look any way you want to, I don’t care, I just want you to come “As a friend, as a friend” I don’t bear a grudge anymore, it’s all water under the bridge, we can be friends right? Comeeeee “As an old enemy” (But I haven’t forgotten) “Take your time, hurry up Choice is yours, don't be late” Prepare any way you like, just come, and don’t be late “And I swear that I don't have a gun No, I don't have a gun No, I don't have a gun No, I don't have a gun“ And why, if the person is a friend, should the singer need to stress so strongly that they don’t have a gun? Singer: “Oh no, I don’t even HAVE a gun, and anyway, we’re going to be friends now right?” (hides gun) |

| This song satirises Christianity. Previously the singer did “dreadful things” like go places and pull faces; not really bad like beating women or shaking babies, but got branded as thoroughly evil nevertheless. But after converting to Christianity, he isn’t bad anymore because he does “good things” like shine his shoes and comb his hair. | |

Just my interpretation, but to me, the song is about the body talking to the mind. "Why can't you see that you are my child?" - you are actually the mind, a construct created by the body. The body isn't "you". As an analogy, you're the operating system that the computer is running, not the computer itself. "Why can't you see that you are my mind?" - Literally "Tell everyone in the world that I'm you" - nevertheless, you will tell everyone that "your" body is "you" "Take this promise to the end of you" - once you die, you won't be around to claim you're the body any more. |

I worked out what the song was about and came back to correct my previous post - it's about Knight Rider. Well a quick googling shows that the song IS about Knight Rider. John (drummer) said as much in an interview and revealed how "meeting John at Dale's Jr, winked an eye and point a finger" was David Hasselhoff meeting him, a big KR fan, at age 12, and doing exactly that. The bits I noticed were: A former cop, undercover, just got shot, now recovered = Michael Knight Fighting crime with a partner = Michael and Kitt before the "mine delusions acquainted etc." part, the instrumental is suspiciously similar to the Knight Rider theme tune! |

It's the nature of human intelligence to extract meaning from nonsense. Some of the explanations here are very clever. However song meanings are seldom as deep as you think they are. What we had here was a well constructed tune that needed lyrics. They started with the vowels, "A E I O U... Y!!!" because that sounded good. Then worked them around to be "A E I, A E I O U", dropped the U because it didn't fit, and decided I E A, I A I O sounded better. Y!!! was always the next line, and they added a rhyme to it, "and we light up the sky". Refrain complete! The verses then are merely Serj showing off his fantastic linguistic skills, starting with a tongue-twister modified to fit the tempo, and other self-made rhymes along the same vein, and finishing with "Y!!!!!" to add continuity. As for "Mine delusions acquainted" etc. you can be sure it's along the same lines. Perhaps the band chose the lines because they meant something personal to them, but listeners will never get any meaning from them other than what they choose to make themselves. But I am not criticising, not at all. It's a great song. |

If you don't eat it, you stay immortal and ignorant (and stupid presumably) but in god's grace. If you do eat it, you gain knowledge but with that comes "sin" and mortality MM is saying that he discovered the centre of knowledge, the real dark truth within the truth As a metaphor, it's the centre of the apple (of knowledge). It's "late" because it's only just become apparent - it's the centre of truth "today" Cutting the apple in two represents the discovery of this inner truth And pray it isn't true because it's horrid I've got something you can never eat, Because this truth will damn you, utterly The next verse is pretty esoteric, I can speculate on a number of meanings but I'll try: I drained my heart and burn my soul, I made use of this knowledge and in doing so abandoned god's grace. Perhaps draining your heart is necessary to become emotionless enough to use it, perhaps burning your soul is like burning your bridges, abandoning god's grace forever I trained the core to stop my growth, I made use of the knowledge to... do what exactly? Not sure about what "stop my growth" means. Spiritual growth? I pray to die in space, to cover me in snow, Second thoughts? I want to undo what I've done, to resume god's grace, as et311 said: >> The "cover me in snow" is in reference to the biblical passage that states how God will wash your sins clean as snow.
