@[Fruitbeard:41942] I thought the same thing for a long time, but we were both wrong. The song, and the album title, are inspired by a 1927 photograph of a tornado, taken near the town of Jasper, Minnesota, by Lucille Handberg. An edited version of the photograph is on the album cover. |

I don't know what the song itself means, but "Bite The Wax Tadpole" is a reference to urban myth that the first transliteration of Coca-Cola for the Chinese market in 1928 literally meant "Bite the wax tadpole" in Mandarin. |

I had always assumed she was not literally betting on horses, but that this was a reference to her drug addiction, horse being slang for heroin. So the song in my mind was about a sex worker/stripper or simply a girl with very low self esteem who was used by men, and who is addicted to drugs and playing with the idea of suicide, hence 'one of these days she's gonna throw the whole bottle [of pills] down' and semi-voluntarily 'trying to hit the big one', as in the lethal dose of heroin that tends to kill most addicts to that drug. |
