| I do not think that this is a romantic song. If fact, I do not think that "he" plays a significant role in the story. I think it's about a mother consoling her daughter after her first sexual encounter. The young girl (daughter) want's it to happen but she wants it to be right and without regrets . The "night" is a metaphor for how quickly we all grow up. Reference to her own lost innocence and her worry over her daughter's dress choice leads me to believe that the mother recognizes her daughter's intentions. We all have hopes and dreams about how we want our lives.... and the lives of our loved ones...to play out. We all want to be the narrator of our life story. I'm guessing that maybe the experience was not exactly what the young girl anticipated it to be.. or maybe it was but I do not think that's the point. I think the mother is assuring her daughter that while absolutely everything is changing their relationship will not falter. | |
