I feel like this song is a extended version of the strangeland song. You might wanna check my annalisys of that one. I believe the main theme of the album is realism x idealism shaped in themes like "the old days", "break-ups" and some others. This song in particular is about a man's idealistic perspective and a girl's pragmatic perspective. What it means is that the girl will decide to take real life risks while the boy will try to convey emotions in the relationship. They both fail in their attempt and some lines describes that. The boy tries to speak of love but she just smiles and puts him down. On the other hand, the girl takes the train to live a new life (in the strangeland!) and the guy decides to stay behind. Well, the real world isn't meant for everybody the same way that emotional experiences aren't appealing for some. I believe the song also tries to show a way to merge these perceptions of life. The girl tries to point directions by which the boy can caught up to her, or, as the song says, a neon river to light his way. Some will find a way to relate to their opposites, some will find the end of the journey frustating. Hopefully, we'll have Keane to put these experiences in songs! |

Alright so i'm an idealistic person and this song took a while to sink in for me, but i guess i understand the concept and i'd like to share with you. We know this is a breakup\reminisce album based on the project as a whole. This is very important to catch the meaning of this extraordinary song. The songs talks about two very idealistic people who decide to go on a journey to explore life and existence together. They do the planning, set everything as it should be and start living this experience. Midway, the girl gets caught up by things that brings some sense to her existence. The other partern still wants to keep that sense of exploration and idealism. When they are both flirting with the uncertainty, the woman "leaps into the water of the strangeland" and the boy becomes a weird sight for her. From a idealistic perspective, and i strongly believe that Tim\Tom shares this personality, leaving the world of ideas and exploration to live in the real world can be a violent transition. That's why this new state is called strangeland because the idealistic can't seem to fit in it. He gets sad because he can't reach this new person that the girl has become. He blames the temptations of the real world, saying that they took his babe away from him in an attemp to convey that fact that she probably just found out some purpose in her existence. Pretty good song, i feel like every world builds up a short but powerful story of exploration and disillusion |

Only a genious would be able to make a terrible album just to finish with such great song. I do believe Matt wrote the album to be essencially bad and hold a shallow message so that he could tell in the end that he's learning to deal with all the stuff he's felt and been through these past years. It seems now he's prepared to accept a spiritual renew in his life and we might get a more meaningful album next time. I do hope he gets by with his collapsible lung. |
