Hozier – Like Real People Do Lyrics 10 years ago
I agree with a lot of older comments, but I feel like adding that I think the relationship is between two men, maybe as a follow up to some of the previous songs. The album definitely has a forbidden love feel to it, and "Take Me To Church" has been established as gay love.

Young the Giant – 12 Fingers Lyrics 10 years ago
I think this song is about a seventeen/eighteen year old leaving home and a tough childhood behind him/her. In the beginning, it seems like the 'you' is specifically someone he/she loves, whether that's a sibling, an old friend or maybe a first love.

"Padded by locks the door knob singed
A rusty close to a doorknob hinge
Remembering the sounds we used to know"
I think this verse is talking about locking away the memories the kids have of their earlier childhood and how it hurts to try and remember them

"But when those sounds sang from our halls
The backstop pressed against bleached walls
Do you remember the sound of snow?"
In this verse, the sounds singing means the memories that keep escaping, and how by 'bleaching the walls' they're trying to wipe all memories clean as though they never existed, but the 'sound of snow' is a good memory they share together that neither really wants to forget.

The chorus and verse afterwards:
"So I said follow me down this time
I wrote the rules but you've got the time
So can you help me
I've got to break free from these chains oh from these chains"
I interpret as wanting to stay with this person you love but knowing you also have to leave this place (whether the place is an actual town, house, or just who you used to be)

"Your eyes they fall before us
Your sighs are all around
Inside the walls have fallen
And now, you're all alone”
There, I think the 'you' changes to the person that maybe made the childhood tough, whether that's an abusive or neglective parent, or maybe just somebody who wasn't there for them in the way they wanted. Now, the kids feel empowered by their ability to leave, and they're previous resentment comes out in this verse.

I don't know though, just a thought.

Young the Giant – God Made Man Lyrics 10 years ago
I don't think this song necessarily has to be about God. To me, "God" seems more representative of that kind of contentment or idealism you can't explain.

Cage the Elephant – Cigarette Daydreams Lyrics 10 years ago
A lot of other interpretations make sense, but when I first listened to this song, I thought about my first love. We were in love with each other, but after she experienced sexual abuse she became too afraid to even kiss me. It was a clean-cut breakup because it wasn't like either of us did something wrong; however there's still a lot of left over feelings. I've moved on but I never really stopped loving her and I know the feeling was mutual. We were both teenagers, so I think there's something to be said about the innocence of loving somebody for the first time.

Cage the Elephant – Hypocrite Lyrics 10 years ago
Maybe I'm stating the obvious but I hear this as a person talking to an abusive parent. They blame themselves for the abuse because of something they did wrong, after being conditioned into thinking this way. Logically, they know it's not their fault but they're just not sure what they buy anymore. They also can't blame the abuser for mistakes because they've messed up too in their life, so that would make them a "hypocrite."
"Your favorite color red
I guess that I'm the hypocrite
You're not responsible
I'm responsible"
Also it could be about domestic abuse, because later in the song the person talks about staying. They might feel like their love for their partner it greater than their drive for self-preservation.

Cage the Elephant – Halo Lyrics 10 years ago
This song could definitely be about a friendship, but I also think it speaks to addiction.
The lines: "Every time I get away you/Find a way to reel me back in." remind me of relapsing after assuming recovery.
I think the halo could be representative of how in the beginning of addiction (whether you're addicted to drugs, self-harm, an eating disorder etc.) it's all good times. You don't rely on the thing, you just use it once or twice and find it helps as a coping mechanism: the "first high." After a while, you actually become addicted and it's no longer making you feel better. Suddenly you need it just to keep your head above the water.

Cage the Elephant – Telescope Lyrics 10 years ago
When I first heard this song, I thought about teenage angst. The lines: "Just like you, I've been tryin'/To be scared" reminds me of how desperate teenagers are to feel pain as though they can get it out of the way and move on with their life. There's this idea that we're taught from an early age that growing old means becoming miserable. A lot of kids try to escape that by finding a passion. I hear this as the narrator trying to determine how he can escape the misery but getting depressed by the entire concept of age and the wasting of youth.

The Mountain Goats – Half Dead Lyrics 10 years ago
I think of this whole album as somebody preparing for suicide. The loneliness and need to leave is established in "Wild Sage" and the thought of death is introduced in "New Monster Avenue." I hear this as the character thinking about his past and feeling nostalgic. "You" could just be the general idea of someone he used to love, or even someone he still does. He is trying to say goodbye while also feeling unsure whether or not he can leave them forever.

The Mountain Goats – New Monster Avenue Lyrics 10 years ago
I've always thought of the album as the thoughts/events leading up to someone's suicide. In "Wild Sage" the character seems to be getting used to the idea of leaving. Whether it's leaving their house, city, life, it's not really made clear but it seems more vague. In this song, the person is reflecting on life in general with a more nihilistic lens, and wondering if leaving a set place isn't good enough.
