Diana Dors was an English actress who was sort of the Marilyn Monroe of England. She passed in 1984, so it was current news when Ray was writing this song. Princess Diana was still married and having kids at the time. |

In Michael Barclay's book "Have Not Been the Same: The CanRock Renaissance 1985-1995", he mentions that Patrick had broken up with Jennifer Pierce, who was in a band called Jale and had sung backup on Smeared. This song was written for Patrick's new girlfriend, yet the duet is with Jennifer. |

From an interview in the Guardian:
Nevertheless, he would be interested in collaborating with a contemporary artist and when talk turns to Ed Sheeran and his recent copyright lawsuit (“Did he settle?”), it reminds him of a similar to-do he had with the Doors in the 60s when they borrowed the opening riff for Hello, I Love You from the Kinks’ All Day and All of the Night, for which they had to pay Davies royalties.
He eventually met Jim Morrison when the Doors came to London’s Roundhouse in 1968 and reminded the light-fingered Lizard King of his “playful plagiarism”.
“He owned up,” Davies reports gleefully. “He said: ‘You really got me.’”

| The Kinks – Lola Lyrics

This is from an article in the Guardian:
Davies’ best songs have come from bittersweet personal experience: Dedicated Follower of Fashion, the deathless Days and, of course, Lola. “The incident with Lola happened in the Castel Club in Paris,” he recollects. “My manager was dancing with a drag queen. I was aware of what was going on and he wasn’t. I just egged him on – it’s not until you get into the daylight and you see the stubble that the realisation dawns.”
But didn’t he enjoy a similar encounter himself? “Yeah, probably,” he chuckles. “I went on a date with someone called Candy Darling [the transgender actress and one of Andy Warhol’s superstars] – the most beautiful-looking woman in the world, who died tragically. We went in to the back room of Max’s Kansas City in New York. We only had coffee,” he adds chastely.

I believe this song is a precursor to "Sunny Afternoon". Both songs are on Face To Face, this comes first, and Sunny Afternoon a few songs later. Both songs feature a guy who was filthy rich at one time, but is not anymore. We don't know why, but we do know that he likes the finer things in life, has an eye for the ladies, enjoys a drink or several, and isn't shy about spending his money.
And doesn't have a hard time finding people help him spend his money. All the people coming to his parties, all the girls accepting jewelry. I would imagine the girlfriend in Sunny Afternoon took full advantage, even taking his car with her.
So apparently he still has the house and the yacht, but not many friends, and hardly any money. He's even drinking beer, for chrissake. |

I always thought this was about being young and careless, when you don't know what you want to do when you grow up. But you're young and you like to have fun, and sometimes that could mean living close to the edge and doing some things that put your life in danger. But you know that someday you will decide what you want to do, and hope you're still around for it. |

| Drive-By Truckers – Cassie's Brother Lyrics

This song tells the story of Steve Gaines and Lynyrd Skynyrd
Cassie Gaines was one of the Honkettes, Skynyrd's female backup singers. Steve Gaines was her brother, and she lobbied the band on his behalf after Ed King left. He played on their live album, One More From The Road, and final studio album, Street Survivors. Not only did he write or co-write many of the songs on that album, he sang lead on "Ain't No Good Life" and duetted with Ronnie Van Zant on "You Got That Right". Ronnie was quoted saying they would "all be in his shadow one day".
Both Cassie and Steve died in the Skynyrd plane crash in 1977, as did Ronnie. |

A song that didn't make In It For the Money, but is on its bonus disc (if you were fortunate enough to get a copy). Just discovered it is also the B side to the "one-sided single", a cover of Hendrix' StoneFree, that accompanies the I Should Coco 20th anniversary vinyl. The label on the b side is blank, but I noticed the grooves and discovered this. Typical of their sense of humor to hide something there! |

@[finslaw:7072] A very worthy first post however. This might be my favorite of all the songs Chris has written about the band and its history, which is saying something at this point, since there are quite a few good ones. |

All is not well, and he is letting us know in an indirect way - he says he's a poet and a songwriter, but here there is virtually no song and not much poetry either. There could be any number of reasons why (can't write, doesn't want to write about what's on his mind, etc.), but whatever the reason is, it's not good. |

Most members of the Family Stone had at least one relationship with another member of the band. Some had more than one. Each of which would have been a Family Affair, so to speak. I would imagine that would take its toll after a while. |

A song about scoring heroin, co-written and sung by someone who would die of an overdose a few years later. Within the context of the Tonight's the Night album, which mourns the deaths of Danny Whitten and Bruce Berry, this is like a flashback scene in a movie, showing how things were before the tragedy - young, carefree and reckless. |

Talking about signing on the dotted line with the record label. Not worried about paying back any recoupable costs, since they never had any money anyway.
Hey Sire, thanks for putting out these albums for us! If they don't sell, don't expect us to pay you back! |
