| OneRepublic – Counting Stars Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
I see this as two couples who are having a hard time because of financial problems. This is presented in the guys view who is the bread winner. He dreams that someday. He won't be counting dollars anymore to support them both but rather he'll be counting stars with her, instead. "Lately I been, I been losing sleep Dreaming 'bout the things that we could be But baby I been, I been prayin' hard Said no more counting dollars We'll be counting stars Yeah, we'll be counting stars" He's been dreaming that someday he'll be super rich that he won't need to worry about money anymore rather, he'll be doing what he really loves and he'll be spending quality time with his family. "I see this life Like a swinging vine Swing my heart across the line" Life is like riding a swinging vine. It takes a lot of swings back and forward before we reach our destination. In simple terms, there are a lot of setbacks in life that will bring us down back to the earth and a lot of successes that will bring us forward to our destination before we really reach what we want. "In my faces flashing signs Seek it out and ye shall find" There are a lot of successful people (flashing signs) out there who shares their life story about how they became successful. And one thing they have in common is they followed what they really wanted eagerly and they found what they wanted. "Old, but I'm not that old Young, but I'm not that bold" He's saying that no one is too old or to young to achieve what they wanted. "And I don't think the world is sold On just doing what we're told" He doesn't believe that the world is completely "sold" on doing what society has brought us up. Which is just to work and work tirelessly just to earn the money (not because we love the job) for the ones we love even at the cause of the time we spend for our family. "I, feel something so right By doing the wrong thing I, feel something so wrong By doing the right thing" The doing the right thing thingy is earning money to sustain us and our family and the wrong thing here is spending time with his wife and children. Let's face it. You can't live with love alone, you need money to support the family you have. In this case, first things first which is to have a financially stability. Now, since the singer wrote this relating to the time when he was still not that good financially, he needed to work a lot which is the right thing at that time but he doesn't really feel that it's right. He feels so wrong inside. On the other hand, spending time with his family and doing what he love, he feels so alive and good inside. "I couldn't lie, couldn't lie, couldn't lie Everything that kills me makes me feel alive" Relating to he preceding line, he couldn't lie that spending time with his love ones which can kill you since you aren't doing anything to earn a living, makes him feel alive. "I feel the love And I feel it burn Down this river every turn" Love is his primary motivation for everything. "Hope is a four letter word" The four letter word, I believe, is a metaphor to four leaf clover. He's saying that hope is his only luck. "Make that money, watch it burn" It comes back to his dreaming phase where he wanted to be super rich and on that time, he don't need to worry about on where to spend it. Simply, he will make so much money that he can waste it as much as he like. "Everything that drowns me makes me wanna fly" Same as the meaning of "Everything that kills makes me feel alive". "Take that money and watch it burn Sink in the river the lessons I learned" A simplification of what he dreams where he just burns money. Sinking in the river connects with "Everything that kills makes me feel alive" and "Everything that drowns me makes me wanna fly" which simply means that he can completely sink on what used to kill him without feeling guilt. |

| The Script – We Cry Lyrics | 11 years ago |

This song points out the very wrong things happening in our society; money runs the world, bad stuffs sells alot more than the good ones, when people grow up they stop caring about the world around them, and finally, most parents work so much that they don't get enough time for their children. I'll interpret the lyrics line by line. "Together we cry Together we cry" (This is pretty much self explanatory) "Jenny was a poor girl Living in a rich world" (Jenny was literally poor. And, we all know that the world is all about who has the most money. So, the rich runs the world) "Named her baby Hope when she was just fourteen" (She became pregnant at an early aged. It is probably the result of prostitution. She is left to fend her own daughter. She also named her baby, Hope) "She was hoping for a better world For this little girl" (She is probably doing all that she can to make a better life for her daughter. She is also hoping, literally, that her daughter won't be like her) "But the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree" (You probably heard the quote "What the tree is, its fruit is". In life, most of the time, we just become like our parents) "*When* she gets that call Hope's too far gone Her baby's on the way *With* nothing left inside" (The call that is being pointed out is probably when we reached the life changing events in our life) (Jenny realized that her Daughter just became like her. The hope for a better life for her daughter is lost. She also became pregnant at an early age. Now, Jenny can't do anything about it since it already happened.) "Together we cry!" (Once again the singer can only share her pain and he cannot do anything about it) "What about *John Play* Could have gone the whole way Lighting up the stage trying to get a deal" (The next person in line is John Play. At first, he was trying his best to achieve his goals in life. He is doing it in a good way. But then...) "Now he's lighting up the wrong way "Something for the pain!" Man you wanna see this kid he was so fuckin' unreal" (No matter what he did, since wrong things sells more, he just cannot achieve his goal in life. He probably got into a severe depression and he turned to drugs to ease the emotional pain he carries. He also jumped into deceitful work just to earn his keep) "When he gets that call He's too far gone" (Now the life changing event here probably is when he is near his last days. He probably realized that he failed miserably in life and that he is too far gone from what he wanted to be.) "To get it together to sing one song" (And, He realized it too late in his life. He can't do anything now.) "They won't hear tonight The words of a lullaby" (Metaphor is used heavily here. Night is the end of day just like death is the end of life. Lullabies are peaceful songs that are sang to children before they sleep. In this case, he probably died unhappy and not in peace) "Together we cry Yeah, yeah, yeah Together we cry Whoa oh whoa oh whoa Together we cry Oh we cry we cry we cry Together we cry Oh we cry we cry Whoa oh whoa oh whoa" (The singer can only share the pain of the two persons in the verses before. He can only cry it out.) "Oh Mary's ambition, She wanna be a politician She's been dreaming about it since she was a girl She thought that she'd be the one who could change the world Always tryna pave the way for women in a man's world" (These lines are pretty easy to understand. Politician is probably just used as a place holder for visionary people.) (Mary dreamed about being the one who could finally change the world for good. I don't think these lines are promoting feminism but rather, Women is a metaphor for good ways and man's world is a metaphor for a tough world. So, if substituted, she's tryna pave a way for good things in a tough world.) "But life happened, house, kids, 2 cars, husband hits the jar, checks that don't go very far now" (Then, life happened to Mary, she got a life that is considered "normal" by the society.) "Now she *ain't* making changes She keeps her mind on her wages" (Probably, when she was a kid, she's wondering why some people aren't trying to do something for the world. She probably hated those people who never give a token of help. But then, she grew up and things happened to her. Now, she's too busy solving her own problems to even care about the world around her. She totally forgot about her dream.) "The only rattling cages are her own" (This line is beautiful. In the end, she imprisoned herself in the same cage as those people before her. "The only rattling cages are her own" :-( ) "Together we cry Together we cry" (The singer can't do anything about it. He can only cry out the sadness he feels inside.) "There's so much sad gonna flood the ocean We're all in tears for the world that's broken" (No matter how much positivity is in this world. Sadness still outweighs them. There's just so many things wrong in this world. The world is truly broken.) "There comes a time when every bird has to fly At some point every rose has to die" (These two lines come together. Bird is a metaphor for the children, Fly is a metaphor for leaving. "There comes a time when every children has to leave". Rose is a metaphor for our parents or guardians. They won't be here forever to support us. They'll also leave this world, sometime.) "It's hard to let your children go Leave home Where they go? Who knows! Getting drunk Getting stoned All alone" (It is hard to let go of your children when they grow up. Parents just don't know what is gonna happen to them.) "Teach a man to fish It'll feed him for life" (This line really applies in life. Teach a person to do something and he or she will be able to do it for the rest of his or her life, you don't need to provide anything to him/her anymore, instead of providing things to him/her directly.) "You show your kids the truth And hope they never lie" (Truth will always set you free and Deceit always do harm. It's better to teach your kids to be honest in life. There are a lot of celebrities who hides behind a mask. This causes a lot of pressure to them and many commits suicide because of this.) "Instead of reading in a letter that they've gone to something better "Bet your sorry now! I won't be coming home tonight"" (This is also one of the root causes of bad things in our society. Instead of teaching the kids about things in life and spending time with them, most parents are so caught up with their jobs. Remember that the best teachers will always be the parents and no one else) "I'm sick of looking for those heroes in the sky Who teach us how to fly" (The singer finally says that he is sick of looking up on those people (successful ones) who says that anyone can be like them, successful. He probably thinks that if what those successful one says is true, then why are there still lots of people who haven't reached that state in life? Why are there still people who have a very depressing life?) "Together We Cry, We Cry, We Cry" (In the end, All we can do is shout out those problems and share them with the rest of the world.) |

| The Script – The End Where I Begin Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| I think this is about being depressed in life (eg. you want to attain something but you always fail) and you are emotionally numb. You just cannot feel anything "Tried to break my heart, well it's broke... Tried to hang me high, well I'm choked" even though this things shall trigger emotions. It's just like meh... Then there's the middle part of the song where everything feels ok again but it just lasts for awhile and everything just hits rock bottom again. | |

In my own interpretation, I think this song is about the catholic church and the religion of Judaism failing to live up with their covenant/promise with Jesus/God. They abused the power given to them. On the Judaism side, they kept breaking the laws of God, made their own laws based on man's tradition and even killed Jesus. And on the Christian side, They abused their power on the middle age, killing people who refuse to believe what the pope/bishop says, branding them heretic and created new beliefs and traditions that wasn't based on the bible (eg. Virgin Mary, Purgatory, Papal Infallibilty). Now the song's title in English is "Live the Life" or simply Live Life. I think it's a word play which, Live is equated to the Jews and Life to the Catholics or vice versa. Or simply Live : Life :: Jews : Catholic, or if you want Live the Life:Jews the Catholic or Catholic the Jews. They, both, are equal. They made the same mistakes according to the song. Now the lines in the lyrics describes Catholic then Judaism, alternately. eg. I use to rule the world, seas that rise when I gave the word. 'This line describes the Catholic then, Now in the moment, I sleep alone; sweep the streets I used to rule. 'This line describes the Judaism ===== The lines that are about the Catholic Church: Verse 1 (This verse describes the time when Roman Catholic Church was feared by everybody): I used to rule the world, seas that rise when I gave the word (Everybody on the middle age was scared of the Catholic Church. Catholic church on that time was like the King of the Earth, "I used to rule the world". They can ask anything that they want and people even the kings would follow, "Seas that rise when I gave the word".) ---- I used to roll the dice, feel the fear in my enemies eyes (This was about the catholic church against the heretics/opposers. It's when the heretics/opposers are about to be judged by the Bishops/Popes whether they'll be imprisoned, excommunicated or executed, "I used to roll the dice". The heretics or anyone who opposess the church would tremble in fear, "Feel the fear in my enemies eyes") --- The minute I held the key, next the walls were closed on me (The things that they have done came back to them. The state and the church finally separated. It can also be interpreted as Jesus taking the keys/permissions from them.) chorus 1: I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing (Jesus' homeland, Jerusalem. God/Jesus is calling. Probably reminding them about their original purpose.) ---- Be my mirror, my sword and shield (I think this is metaphorical. I interpret the mirror as "Be like me, the catholic church", the sword as "Fight for me/Fight for my teachings" and the shield as "Defend me/Defend my teachings") ---- (This next line is cut in to two. Now this is an interesting line. Jesus/God is talking to both Judaism and Catholicism. Then both of them responds the same line "Never an honest word but that was when I ruled the world".) Jesus: For some reason I cant explain once you go there was never, (Jesus here tells us that sometime after he left the world,) Church: Never an honest word but that was when I ruled the world. (The Catholic Church after the apostolic age, failed to live up to their duty. They broke the covenant. The worst part is the persecution of the heretics (eg. Galileo), who in the end, were innocent. Now in the present time, The church thinks they are getting better now, "But that was when I ruled the world". ) ---- In the second and third chorus, the last line was replaced by, For some reason I can't explain, I know st. Peter won't call my name. (Deep inside the catholic church is hopeless and the damage is already too much. There is just too many false teachings now that is impossible to remove.) Verse2: The next verse will be discussed later ===== Now this lines are about Judaism (warning for the Jews who are reading this: The song is pretty much pro-Jesus. It accepts that Jesus was the messiah.) Now in the moment, I sleep alone; sweep the streets I used to rule (In the present, "Now in the moment", Judaism is still without the guidance of God, "I sleep alone.". If you read the bible, God abandoned Israel and Judah long ago after they kept breaking his rules then he sent his son, but he rejected them.) ---- Listen as the crowd would sing, "Now the old king is dead long live the king". (The Catholics of the past, "The crowd", thought that their church, "The king", are victorious over Judaism, "The old king".) ---- And, I discovered that my castle stands upon pillars of salt pillars of sand (This describes the destruction of their last temple on the roman times. It is still not rebuilt.) Chorus 1: Roman Catholic choirs are singing (It is catholic not cavalry. The Catholics of the past were feeling victorious.) ---- My missionaries in a foreign field (The people of Judaism is spread everywhere, Living in a foreign land. They can't still completely return to Israel plus the other tribes of Israel are still completely missing.) ---- (This next line, like in the catholic interpretation, is cut into two.) God: For some reason I cant explain once you go there was never, (God, here, talks about israelites and Jews committing to the covenant of God. He always leaves them for awhile then he returns always to find out that.) Judaism: Never an honest word but that was when I ruled the world. (Never was an honest word. Most of them already broke the covenant and some of them even created new laws. But now, the modern Jews are following the practices and laws strictly(eg. Circumcision, Sabbath).) --- Never an honest word but that was when I ruled the world (This line is repeated for the part of the Judaism. It is like a forever loop. I think this signifies that in the end, It is all gone even if they follow the laws. Their religion is dead. They never accepted Jesus, the Messiah.) Verse 2 Interpretation: The first two lines of the verse 2 is set around the time of Jesus until his death. This 2 lines complement each other, Jews: There was a wicked wild wind (They felt that something bad for them is gonna come.) Church: Blew down the doors to let me in (This shows the beginning of the Catholic Church. The catholic church taking the scene away from Judaism.) ---- Jews: Shattered windows and the sound of Drums (Continuous destruction of Judaism. Their temple is destroyed then the Catholic faith is adopted by Rome.) ---- Church: People couldn't believe what I've become (The change occurs to the church. If someone from the time of Jesus is still living, he will probably not believe what he is seeing. The church is totally different.) ---- The last two lines of this verse tells us the main reason why both of these religion lost their honor to God. Jews: Revolutionaries wait for my head on a silver plate (Catholics of the past waited for the complete obliteration of the religion of Judaism. The main reason for that is because they didn't accept Jesus.) Catholics: Just a puppet on a lonely string of who would ever wanna be king (My favorite line! I think it is 'of' not 'oh'. This describes the bishops and the popes. Thinking that, they are infallible in every way and that everything they say is from Jesus, himself. It is sad to think that the church established by Jesus, which has billions of followers, became a propaganda puppet, "puppet on a lonely string", for those people who just wanted power.) That's my interpretation. Don't take it seriously. |
