On the surface, this album is about autumn. This being the last song of the album, it at least partially represents that point in the year when all the leaves are down and everything is gray and dead, but winter has yet to set in. But this is Rivers of Nihil folks, so there are gonna be some existential/nihilistic jabs thrown at us. I think the first stanza is about what it feels like to reject your previously held notions of god and meaning and value. Fear drowns the mind, for sure. “Like Ants coveting me” this seems like a reductio aimed at religious folk. If it’s absurd to think that ants worship us and our power, it’s also absurd to look up to something else that makes us seem like ants by comparison. “Oh can it be, I’ve longed to see that which truly owns the light” -this is referring to our human desire for there to be something greater, some giver of meaning. But, after all, it’s a pale facade. There is no giver of meaning, but at least there’s fantastic death metal like this to fill the void. |
