Capricorn / Agoratopia Lyrics

Fear, fear drowns the mind
In my kingdom, in my refuge
Within this empty room
Where I can speak to you

A last breath for the earthly
In empty space
Distant voices chant softly
It's beginning to look like a pale facade
Another cry for existence
Stands to be ignored
But it's a pale facade

It's a pale facade
Hands stretching toward the last day beneath the sun
Reaching paradox/in time we will unmake ourselves
It's a pale facade
Secure in your right to remain
Breathing the air you did not earn
Like ants coveting

Strong sense of dependence
No will of its own
Walk for centuries to realize all that's left is a fading image
Words like fleeting omniscience
Cloaked in subtle pain
No answer for those needing relief from existence

Oh the sight!
Oh can it be?
I've longed to see that which truly

Owns the light
A calming wave of incandescent grace

Spreads its rot

It's a pale facade
Hands stretching toward the last day beneath the sun
Reaching paradox/in time we will unmake ourselves
It's a pale facade
Secure in your right to remain
Breathing the air you did not earn

When the sun doesn't rise
And the hope of light fades
Rest these eyes a while
I'll see your face

Cover art for Capricorn / Agoratopia lyrics by Rivers of Nihil

On the surface, this album is about autumn. This being the last song of the album, it at least partially represents that point in the year when all the leaves are down and everything is gray and dead, but winter has yet to set in. But this is Rivers of Nihil folks, so there are gonna be some existential/nihilistic jabs thrown at us. I think the first stanza is about what it feels like to reject your previously held notions of god and meaning and value. Fear drowns the mind, for sure. “Like Ants coveting me” this seems like a reductio aimed at religious folk. If it’s absurd to think that ants worship us and our power, it’s also absurd to look up to something else that makes us seem like ants by comparison. “Oh can it be, I’ve longed to see that which truly owns the light” -this is referring to our human desire for there to be something greater, some giver of meaning. But, after all, it’s a pale facade. There is no giver of meaning, but at least there’s fantastic death metal like this to fill the void.
