Man, can Waters pen a lyric! Just reading them, knowing full well how achingly beautiful the melody he sings over it, gives me chills. I think this song speaks broadly about the passage of time and who, over time, we need to leave behind, be that a military person, a cherished friend, or close family. There's also something about Mott Street, which is in Little Italy in New York City. I think the lyrics are reflecting the struggle of the immigrant at the turn of the 20th century. Leave it to Roger to be able to write a lyric that captures something specific inside of something so broad. He's been doing it for decades. |

The "genius" here is the shocking weirdness and dark horror merged with childhood whimsy and toddler rhymes. Some of those lyrics were sung because he liked the cadence and flow of those words together. There's probably no inherent meaning other than an image of childhood strangeness, a fleeting memory of a toy, a book, or whatever. Floyd took this to a whole other dimension after Syd was out of the band. You hear the fright and terror in songs they did post-Syd like Careful With That Axe, Eugene and One Of These Days. It crops up in songs like Sheep and several places on The Wall too. |

Few songs are as simple and as beautiful as this. The universality of the theme based on passionate unrequited love is time-tested and relatable by many. But this song contains that unmuddied poetry that makes for a clear and eminently beautiful message that anyone can connect to. The saddest line is, "I know you haven't made your mind up yet". Here, this person is pouring their soul into another all with the knowledge that they still might not get what they want in the end. Tragic and gorgeous. |

Lyrically, this song makes not sense. What does having trouble finding a job have to do with how much time it takes a woman to fall in love with your unemployed ass? I think the lyricists tried to combine two wildly differing subject matters together in one song with a great groove and a killer chorus. Personally, I don't get it. |

This song reminds me of a friend of mine who I fell deeply in love with, but because of her addiction to a physically abusive boyfriend and drugs, she faded away. Love definitely stuck in her veins. I miss her so much. |

Probably my favorite lyric of all time. I've worked in enough corporate environments to realize just how true this is. |
