Pearl Jam – Once Lyrics 7 years ago
There's also "But I'm lookin' at you the whole fuckin' time" verse (missing above) which basically means he cannot get her out of his head.

I know that there is a mom-son theory, but recently another solution came to my mind which is simply falling in love and not handling it. (People write powerful songs out of love mostly.) "Admit" the unfulfilled love, "Relive without pain", "Backstreet lover on the side" = a metaphor for a man who dreamed of being kind of backstreet lover, but was put on a side. "Bomb in my temple" = strong emotion that cannot be handled and he is about to explode of it. ".16 gauge" is an expression of rage of not handling the emotion, "play" might as well mean he would shoot himself. "I could lose myself" = he cannot behave naturally in presence of that girl. "Try and mimic, insane" = he might try to mimic his natural self, but can't and it's all insane. "I am in it" = he is her junkie. "Indian summer I hate the heat" = it happened during this time of the year and he'd prefer it wasn't so hot so that he'd avoid it. "I got a backstreet lover on the passenger seat" = that part of him being in love is his own crazy passenger, he cannot get rid of. "Hand in my pocket" = I believe means trying to act cool (might be something else though). "I could control/lose myself /love you" refers to fairytales starting with "once upon the time this and that happened" = a wish from a fairytale that never came true. I strongly believe that a powerful song like this must have been written out of very strong love.

@[bluboy31:28294] Today I had this idea that the person feeling homeless was Eddie who felt love to a girl where his love was not returned in the end and he has to cope with it. Chasing away butterfly thoughts and somehow begin his life again. Though, the song is a good abstraction for any kind of situation leaving the subject feeling "homeless", including Eddie's childhood trouble.

Tori Amos – Putting The Damage On Lyrics 7 years ago
I think I am starting to understand the whole Boys For Pele album. It may refer to relationship(s) which somehow ignited but never became fulfilled. First, I thought this song is about someone whom she had a real (troublesome) relationship with. But when you listen to Hey Jupiter, then the Putting the Damage On and then the Twinkle, they create a series. So the story goes: She fell in love with a man, he looked to be interested in her, then he decided not to build up on that (maybe stick to his girlfriend), so he was putting the damage on, telling or signaling that this cannot go on. That explains "my best impression of my best Angie Dickenson" (A.D. was an actress), when she was trying to impress him anyway. Tori accepts and lets it be, though every time she sees him, she becomes "worried" (in love again) because "he still looks pretty". The beginning of the song "Packed my things and divided what was mine" must not be understood literally. It's a metaphore of him saying she should not continue with her interest and they should stay "divided". How you like that explanation. Cool, ha?

@-nienna- "Little masochist" is her pulling herself into the situation, "Lifting up her dress" - I imagine she break down and starts crying into her dress she lifts to dry her tears.

Tori Amos – Beauty Queen/Horses Lyrics 7 years ago
Horses = heroin = drug = love. Love may literally function as a drug. That song, I believe, is about her falling in love with someone and becoming addicted, a junkie to the person she is in love with (that's why horses, heroin), but she does not contact him, though she thinks he might be interested: "And I would if you would but you never would"; "Maybe you find me... and maybe together we..."; "You showed me the meadow..." - a place where it could work out for them. "I chased down your ..." - she watched him, etc. "Then opened my hands and they were empty then" - it was not happening. "Counting your bees" and "Camera is rolling" might describe them meeting, flashing eyes and stuff and it might be so easy, but it' not. "And if there is a way to find you I will find you" - she'd love to contact him somewhere, somehow. But then she's back to the idea that she is on junk, fighting demons, and maybe it'll stay like that. BUT MAYBE NOT! :)

@[PopeyeDoyle:28032] i think, "there's a light in your platoon" means "there's a light in your other you", stating she can wait for his nicer "him" to appear. in some cases platoon means a "substitute player". so not realy a soldier, though definitely someone very manly. ...one of the best song in known universe.

Tori Amos – Flying Dutchman Lyrics 11 years ago
Reading the lyrics completely changed my view of the song. It's so great. My guess that it has to do with a musician's journey to another universe while playing the instrument and doing it by themselves no matter what other people (record company or teachers say). Their talent takes them away their own way like a rocket ship. Then the talent might as well be a gift from god or the universal consciousness and that's where she says "i know the guy who runs the place" and asks "flying dutchman are you there?" whithout actually thinking directly god but anything up there. What do you think?

Pearl Jam – Given to Fly Lyrics 11 years ago
This is definitely about surfing in contrast with the society. Surfing brings realization of liberty, unity with nature, simplicity yet complexity of life. Society brings complicated relations, problems, etc. There can be metaphoric meanings too, but anyone who ever surfed can see this meaning right away, Amazing how a bunch of Hawaian youngsters influenced today's world and amazing how a song of these qualities emerged more or less because of that bunch of guys back in 1700-1800.
