Very hard to say if the meaning in the lyrics is a critique of or a belief in a value. Is it the value of navel gazing or high mindedness? Does it say we are turned away from the world around us or are we above it?
A sophisticated song just like most of the music from the 1980s. Love that era! |

Two days after New Years Eve my parents asked me to do some shopping for them. Some of the shelves were empty. For a few seconds I felt a frustration. My shopping plans were in shambles. Oh no! Oh no!
Shelves were empty all over northern Europe because people had cooked food for the New Years Eve weekend. Oh no! Oh no!
Found alternative choices of food in the store I knew my parents liked.
While sitting in the car outside the shop I thought about the expectations I have about going to a store. Imagine all the stores and shopping centers in the northern Europe and one can just expect to have food on the store shelves every week. Two days break in working and logistic routines and some micro frustration is created inside me. Hundreds of stores and one just expect shelves to be refilled with news food or goods. I wondered how many of us living in our part of world just walk around with our expectations and micro frustrations?
2022, millions of people lost their livelihood in Pakistan, hundreds of thousands of mothers in eastern Africa could not breast feed their children and so on.
One change is finding that place inside oneself discovering ones mental limits like unreflected entitlement. One important thing is to learn about gratitude.
This song show the importance to me that change start inside oneself. |

(The truth is, I thought it mattered)
(I thought that music mattered)
(But does it? Bollocks! Not compared to how people matter)
(We'll be singing, when we're winning, we'll be singing)
That is someone waking up and noticing that the mindset and all the goods and services that neoliberalism brought to society were not a blessing. |

This song was probably written to sooth people (women and children) that were dependent on someone (husband or father) who could not show responsibility concerning money or family relationships. The lyrics give powerless people a voice and tells them that are people knowing what they struggle with. |

Also get this impression that the song is about a couple. The communication is onesided from both perspectives but there is some kind of equilibrium. One partner says my life is plain (so, my opinions are no big deal in a bigger context). The other partners says: no, your opinions are strange. The first partner says: Why do you say that? Because my opinions do not matter in a larger context, it is crazy to say my opinions are strange or insane because they do not matter. A conversation between two drunken or high people struggling with meaning. |

Soon four years of sobriety. This song pulled me through cold turkey and the process of handling hard facts about myself that I had been hiding from. Four years into sobriety this song really cuts deep in a bitter sweet way. I still have people and family members caught in the self-soothing game I left. Drugs and alcohol and people run around in circles. Thank you Mark David Hollis for the text you wrote. Thank you God for saving me and allowing people to enjoy beautiful songs like this to get stronger and find relief in your Grace. |

Was a drunkard for seven years. It was added to that I had bad mental health for almost thirty years.
I experienced the meaning in the chorus eveytime I looked into the mirror. I could not see my face. I did not recognize the person I saw. It was just a blur.
One day I repented, Jesus did it. I believe it.
After that I could see my face again. I could see who I was. |

All teenagers, they are at a concert or event just like in the video. Everybody present focus on something and let everything go. Self-control and responsibility, gone.. They do not think except out of their social superficial roles and instant urges or pains.
People, standing outside, looking at the group, just see the reckless teen-spirit in full effect.

Mentally the lyrics is spot on. It is in a cultural context.
This was the regular day in the early 1990s. Before the internet. This is how I experienced the days. Alone.
Sat at home, listened to the same records day after day, played the same video games on SEGA Genesis, drinking Earl Grey Tea, dreaming about something else.. Feeling sad, sometimes hopeful, thinking about someone I thought attractive. |

A song with a deep message in its core. It is a song I return to when I want to feel strong.
Dignity and respect.
Was looking through a digitalized local newspaper archive this past week and found an thirty year old article about a street janitor that I personally saw working on the streets where I live. He passed away probably twenty years ago. Not quite sure. He was a very special man. He worked with pride for the council. He was a man you could see walking out alone a dark winter evening and when people met him he took up a flash light and lighted his face and showed a friendly grin. When I saw the black and white photo it was a great feeling to see and remember him again. Last time I saw him was probably around year 1993. |

Watched a couple of minutes of a swedish prime time tv show yesterday. The guests were ”influencing” people that keep showing up in every prime time show on every platform. They are only everywhere because they are risk free money for production companies. But I am so feed up and bored by seeing the same people everywhere talking like they are the center of the universe.
The lyrics in this song is still up to date. Just change some stuff. The technology terms and think in an abstract way about how everybody who want to be somebody try hard to be like everybody else. With internet this pattern that Nik sing about is everywhere. I think in our smartphones that are connected 247. How many years of tv-dinners in social media photoform or Youtube-stuff will the world endure? |

Visited a rock festival in the year of 2013. Had to wait a couple of hours until the band KISS would enter the stage to perform. Heard this song played in the festival area out of some kind of PA/music-system and wondered what song it was, who was the artist and so on. Tried to search on the internet at home to find the song by writing down key words I remembered. No result. A couple of weeks ago I entered my car and as soon I had started the car radio this song was playing again and I started to memorize it by repeating the chorus a couple of minutes while driving. Until today I forgot the episode but here in the sofa I suddenly remembered the chorus and googled it. Yes! Found it. This was the song! The strange thing is that I did not identify Donald Fagen as a singer because I like his theme song Centurys End from a 80s Michael J Fox movie. |

| Pearl Jam – Even Flow Lyrics

Was a heavy drinker for five years. Lost every cent I had. At my lowest point I choose to close down my bank account instead of paying the annual fee, why? Because I wanted to buy 24 cans of beer instead a regular friday afternoon. So when the cans were empty I woke up one hangover monday without a bank account it took my almost two years to get a new account. During that waiting period the burecracy in my society moved into administrative categories you do not want to end up in. Had to do lots of paper work and borrow time and money from other people to get to the administrative offices. Like the I.R.S in my home country and so on.
Even flow
Thoughts arrive like butterflies
Oh he don't know, so he chases them away
Someday yet he'll begin his life again
Life again, life again
During the five years of drinking the normal life I once lived seem to be more and more distant. If any constructive thoughts entered my mind I chased them away.
Why? Because I felt like a hypocrite thinking in such ways. My identification was so strong with getting drunk or high that every constructive thought was a risk not worth taking. Because if i solved one problem I had to solve everything else I had done. All the shame and guilt were not worth it. So for me I was being a hypocrite identifying with normalcy or having happy thoughts, it was easier to say.
"DO NOT JUDGE ME!"
Well! But that was not the question at all. It all was a question about discernment. I choose 24 cans of beer instead of having a bank account plus it took me two years of paper work to get back to society.
So do not chase constructive thoughts away! |
