This song haunts me. The lyrics are exactly the way I felt as a teenager living in Tahoe one summer. The place was vibrant and active all summer and then the day after Labor Day it went dead. The love of my life (thus far) had left that day along with the rest of the summer crowd. When I heard those lyrics,
"Nobody on the Road, Nobody on the beach, I feel it in the air, the summer's out of reach. Empty lake, empty streets, the sun goes down alone. I'm driving by your house, though I know youyr're not home". Were exactly what I went through, including driving by my girlfriend's summer house even though I knew she had gone back to the Bay Area. It gave me comfort somehow to drive by.
The Boys of Summer were all the summer kids from L.A. and San Francisco that I was competing against for her attention. The line "My love for you will still be strong after the boys of summer have gone" were especially poignant. Brilliant song. When I heard the song years later I could not believe it. It was like Henley had read my mind. |
