The line that always gets me in this song is 'I always wanted to be the face in front of me.' I know exactly the feeling. Of hiding things, of faking things, and of wanting so badly to stop the double life and become unified, to have who I was and who I showed the world become the same person. It's exhausting and debilitating. It's a beautiful line, and a beautiful delivery. |

In 1994, I didn't give this song a second thought. Mixed themes, but sure. Today, the obvious contrast and conflict of Weakerthans & Propagandhi influence is bizarre and wonderful and hilarious. Hard to believe they were in the same band and produced a stylistic and thematic mash-up like this. It's brilliant in its own way; how Chris takes the romantic phrases and re-formulates them into something political and cutting. |

I'm hearing "I hope she sticks around when he turns 30, and this dirty tour of duty is through". Totally makes sense in the context of the song. The lyrics above seem a bit meaningless and convoluted, given how straightforward the rest of the song is about a brother serving in the military. |
