| Above & Beyond – Alchemy Lyrics | 10 years ago |

> All these words you speak to me > Are from a foreign land > You're telling me that birds don't fly > How can it be that you love her? He is breaking up with the singer. She is in disbelief; she almost cannot understand the words he is saying. > You don't have to raise your voice > I still don't understand > There's me and you, and you and me > So how can it be that you love her? When he breaks up with her, the singer expresses her disbelief to him, which causes him to raise his voice. She explains that she heard him the first time, but further emphasizes that she can't believe this is happening. > It was alchemy > To sing to me your freedom song > To make love where there was none > Alchemy, now it's all gone > And she is the golden one This stanza is particularly clever, simultaneously playing with the definition of alchemy as well as "make love". Alchemy is the mystical art of converting cheap metal into gold. In reality, alchemy doesn't actually work, but more on that later. The singer is saying that the antagonist metaphorically used alchemy to "make love where there was none." She is implying that he had sex with someone that he did not love, and now he thinks that he loves her. So there is an implied affair here. Further, his actions caused their relationship to dissolve, and she completes the alchemy metaphor by saying "she is the golden one." In other words, his actions caused their relationship to disappear, and it is now replaced with the new love affair being the golden one. Now, some alchemists in history claimed that they could convert metal to gold, but it was a sham. In effect they only put a very thin layer of gold over normal metal to trick everybody. So in these lyrics there is an implication that although the new love affair is the golden one, it might not be pure gold as the antagonist is claiming. In other words, he's saying he loves her, but he's either lying or fooling himself. Either way, the singer's relationship with him is gone. > So what are you saying? > We've got to dismantle it all > Rip off the paper, smash up the walls > How can it be that you love her? The singer further agonizes over the antagonist's actions. They've put a lot into the relationship, and now it's all for nothing. |

| This Beautiful Republic – Going Under Lyrics | 12 years ago |

I really enjoy this song because although I once believed in Christianity, I am now an Atheist, and the key line from the lyrics can be interpreted as apostasy rather than affirmation of faith: > I am finally free from the burden that was slowly drowning me. Believing in the lie of religion is a burden that was slowly drowning me, and now I am finally free. |

| Motion City Soundtrack – Happy Anniversary Lyrics | 12 years ago |

I'm not sure if it's intentional, but I think part of the power of this song is that at first it can be misconstrued as a breakup song, and then at some point there is a sobering paradigm shift where you realize that it is actually much, much darker than that. Let me try to walk you through this experience: > Drain me slowly of the will to fight > Glowing yellow in the bedroom light > There is a terror in your eyes tonight > Something awful has you wrapped in white > Take me in your arms and hold me tight I left out a few lines, but you can see that it is possible to interpret this first stanza as a couple, perhaps married, who are in their bedroom having an argument. And while there is love, the couple has realized that the relationship cannot last. > Cause I won't be here for long, my dear > Settle our accounts > Happy anniversary > Show me how to calm your fears > I'll do what I can Even after this stanza the interpretation holds. The relationship is ending; one of them is moving out. Ironically, it is happening on or near their anniversary. Again they don't hate each other, but they know it must be done. > I can feel it in my bones tonight > Swallowing whatever's in its sight > Struggling to breathe with all my might Perhaps the first clue is here. But still, struggling to breathe could be something that happens when you are crying or having an emotional crisis, which is understandable in the situation of a marriage falling apart. > Cause I won't be here to dry your tears > Send the kids my love > Happy anniversary > Promise me you'll laugh, my dear, after I am gone At this point in the listening experience, your eyes widen a bit and you start thinking "wait a minute..." You start trying to remember the words from the beginning verses but before you can, Justin launches into the final stanza: > Cause I won't be waking up, my dear > Time has run its course > Happy anniversary > Now I'll say goodbye, my dear > This will be our last > Happy anniversary With a knot in your stomach you almost feel shameful about your previous interpretation as you try to hold back tears. |

| Blindside – After You're Gone Lyrics | 12 years ago |

The lyrics are vague enough that there is more than one interpretation. However the last stanza is unambiguously powerful: > The first thing that meets the eye > When I crossover into the light > I want it to be you > Right after I'm gone This verse is not only the climax of the song, but the entire album. The 3/4 time structure helps to that end. He's expressing his love for someone by saying that they're the first thing that he wants to see after he dies. This implies that his connection to this person goes beyond his material body. |
