Nirvana – D-7 (Wipers cover) Lyrics 4 years ago
I just found this song yesterday, the Wipers version - I can't help but think it's about getting dragged off to jail. It's what happens to misfits. Violent behaviour often stems from shame. And shame is what a misfit feels.

But could be very wrong of course.

@[ziggytwig:30630] making big what is small and small what is big will always be a driving factor in art.

@[mousyhairgirl:30629] it's fun finding your own interpretation in a song, and it can make a song very personal.

To the next man or woman, it may be complete jibberish of course. I always feel that way when artists beat around the bush concering the meaning of their songs - but think of it this way: we're reasoning from a small perspective, looking for what is great. Many artists perform their art to put into small, tangible perspective the greatness of experiences.

And me, I just like to ramble.

My personal interpretation:

Song is about coming of age, and comparing it to a hazardous journey into space.

As one leaves childhood, one is catapulted into a confusing and at times dangerous world that one will have to come to terms with at some point.

"Take your protein pills and put your helmet on" refers to a mother's love and care.

"You've really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare"

You have reached adulthood through some sort of "rite de passage". You are being inned by the community and it is now time to leave your "capsule" and be a whole person in the world.

"And I'm floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do"

Floating in a most peculiar way - you sense that there are forces at work that force your hand. No longer are you safe and protected, and no longer can your choices be clear. The stars, your hopes and dreams and image of the future, look different now. Planet earth is blue and there is nothing you can do.

At the end, you come to terms with your fate and that of the world around you. You are coming of age, and experience has made you still - even though you have journeyed so far. You realize there is no control, and you may as well surrender yourself to the tides.

To me it seems it's about a girl he really wants, but only gets to be with in his imagination. No need to spell it all out ;)

Wait... Is he implying he has taken advantage of a decorated cake in the past, sexually?

Forget all the lies, forgive me the wounds... Who knows?

Is it really about nothing? Or is it about the frustrating and alienating contrast of ultra ordinary everyday bullshit next to your deepest existential issues? The song reminds me a lot of my own frustrations and amazement about these things, so that's why I would think so.

Either way, this is another great song on one of the best albums I've ever heard! Really, really special.

It's probably just about missing a date, but as depression has turned me into a sad egocentric pile of misery, to me it's about someone who has lived a great deal of his life without any sense of direction. As the years pass, he starts getting more and more uncomfortable with the emptiness he's experiencing and seeks for something to hold onto (sex, drugs, whatever) to make him feel good... Ultimately, he finds that this does not kill the emptiness but he realizes it's too late to make a change. He's too depressed and empty to gather up the (emotional) strength to make a choice and actually lives in the past while the world around him has moved on.

A timing tragedy.
