British sugar bureau...
When I told you what I...
And I...
And I wouldn't ask you to pretend
That we were one
And still another time...
Forget all the lies
Forgive me the wounds
And all the world was used to love...
And yes!
We'd still be happy in another time...
But so what?
So please send me icing and decorating sets
I enclose a cheque and postal order number...

this song is about these flyers that robert smith used to always receive in the mail, and they were forever annoying him.
I think alcohol influenced this song..

Thank God for lyrics! Before finally reading the lyrics for this one online, I truly thought that Robert was saying "chicken postal order" instead of "cheque and postal order number..." (laughs) Yeah, a true nonsense song if there ever was one, but c'mon, you have to like it.
I also thought he was singing something about chicken first :) Love this song!
I agree with strange day it makes sense that he is talking/bitching about pamphlets...and he's saying so what because he doesn't think it's important. But other parts of the song don't fit in with it but the point is strange day is probably the closet lol
I noticed that, at the end of the song, there is a sound like he is crumpling the sugar bag... Maybe it has a meaning... And, tumultinateakettle, I laughed so hard when I saw the picture! It's really funny! Maybe rabbit_ is right...? Anyway, the song is really good and catchy and it makes me laugh! Robert is so funny ^^ I love him!
Is it really about nothing? Or is it about the frustrating and alienating contrast of ultra ordinary everyday bullshit next to your deepest existential issues? The song reminds me a lot of my own frustrations and amazement about these things, so that's why I would think so.
Either way, this is another great song on one of the best albums I've ever heard! Really, really special.
Wait... Is he implying he has taken advantage of a decorated cake in the past, sexually?
Forget all the lies, forgive me the wounds... Who knows?
the libertines resemble the cure on this track. i think it's just the way robert sings it, very rough. but it's a cool song. i love it how he says 'so what?' its like oh do fuck off.
