i think the song is about how superficious people are...or CHOOSE to be. we look away for the things we do not want to see. or we don't care enough to REALLY look. we look. we see. we judge and we hardly ever take the time to dig deeper. to talk to a person. hey, you look like this or that. but are you FEELING like that? what is going on in your life? are you okay? (and really MEANING that question. not just an empty question.) a little child. dancing in her tutu. oh...she must be so happy. what a lovely child. but...why does not anybody see the bruises on her arms or other places? don't they REALLY see it? or are they choosing to look away because it is 'none of their business' ? we look. we judge. little girl. dancing. so: happy. WRONG !!! a young girl. looking good. not an gram of fat on her body. she is spinning. dizzy? for hunger? is she dieting when it is not needed? why does nobody take the time to ASK? we look. we judge. young, slender, so: happy. WRONG !!! a young woman in a weddingdress. make up. hair nicely done. she has someone who wants to marry her. why did not anybody ask her how she felt about that marriage? did she feel pressed into it? did she not see another way, perhaps? maybe the guy beats her, and she did not dare to leave him? we look. we judge. young. going to marry. beautiful. so: happy. WRONG! then...that last woman of the song. homeless. almost without any possions. ony two bags. abandoned by her family. all on her own. obviously this woman will not be pretty. she will have no make-up in her 2 bags. no place to live. so most likely her hair won't be perfect. most likely she will even be dirty. slept in her cloths we look. we judge. dirty. wrinkled cloths. apparantly homeless. so: unhappy. but... if you talk to a homeless person, you will find out that not ALL homeless people are unhappy. some of them have the nicest of dreams. some of them actually CHOOSE to live like that. some of them feel free and independant lving like that. we look. we judge. but what we actually SHOULD be doing is: CARE. and TALK and LISTEN. really LISTEN. that is what i think this song means. |

i think it is a marvelous song about a boy/man who has not (yet) found his dreamgirl. he tries to convince himself that he does not need one. (all by myself...this is what i choose) OR... he is just waiting for the RIGHT one, and does not want to waste time fooling around with girls that just aren't IT for him. which is a respectfull aspect - i think. but all along he keeps on hoping and dreaming and fantasizing. a dolphin that swims above the world is not something that exists...but maybe it is a methaphore for a guardian angel? one that flies over the world...having a better overview on all things and people on earth. knowing more than his protege knows. and the man is putting his fate in this one... trusting him, that " one day he will find his girl". i think, this song is about real and deep love and trust in your own fate and your guardian angels. and maybe God...although i think some people would be offended if someone would compare God with a dolphin. on the other hand...dolphins are the sweetest creatures on earth. they do not destroy the planet. they are intelligent. can be playfull. can be carefull. (know if a woman is pregnant and will be carefull with her belly) Dolphins are known to have saved people from sharks and carried them towards safety when they were drowning. personally...i don't think God would be offended if someone would compare him with such a wonderful creature... |

i think it is an accusation towards mankind. it is telling how mankind is always only thinking of themselves, while their pets give them all their love and loyalty and trust. clearly the animals were abandoned. no-one cared for them. they should have saved them too, or, if that was not be possible, kill them as painless and quickly as possible. in stead of that, they left him to suffer for hours without end... with no hope for salvation. probably celebrating and congratulatinig each other for being saved just in time. with not one serious thought of the animals that they were responsible for. and no-where...in the whole song...the animals even ONCE thought an accusational thought towards their owners. even the last one, up untill his last consious moment, only thought good thoughts of his owner. how he would be proud. and how the girl would feed him, and pet him, and love him. and play with him. it would have probably the thought he took with him, when he sank below the water surface, to the bottom of the sea...drowning...with only love in his heart. love and loyalty. which we, humans do not deserve... this song is an eyeopener on how egoistic people are and how golden hearted animals are. |

i believe this is about S&M. this song was written in a time, when S&M still was not quite accepted. when you were submissive, you were considered to be stupid. what woman would WANT to be sumissive, when all those older generation of women has FOUGHT so hard for equality? if you were dominant, and a woman, you must most likely be a bitch or a witch. if you were dominant, and a man, you were a sick basterd. a sadist. little do people know that in S&M it is all about trust and freedom of will. the submissive CHOOSES to surrender. you can not choose to BE submissive. this is in your character. it is much like being a hetero, or homosexual. you do not CHOOSE to be it. you are...or you are NOT. the song tells about how she fell to her knees... - oh my god, what is this? - the very first time, you realise you WANT to be submissive...you WANT to be on your knees...and when you realise this actually feels GOOD for you... this is such a strange feeling. you have to grow into it. address it for yourself. look at the feeling. taste it... look at this piece of tekst in the song: - And imagine you opening your door In your drawer there's some leather in there I refuse, you persist It's a moment of madness leather....like a whip? like leather cuffs? like leather clothing? - i refuse, you persist - i do not 'taste' REAL resistance in this sentence...it is sung much too sweet to have the meaning of real resistance. it is more like the playfull 'catch-me-if-you-can' refuse... you persist.... well, what submissive would even WANT a bdsm master that would NOT persist? it is all that makes it worth while! but there is more. much more to bdsm what most people do not know. it is more about commitment than a normal marriage. look at this piece of tekst: You know I'm not asking a lot Only your life I don't want to get what I want But I'm gonna ask you to stop But I'm full of lies a submissive gives herself to a master. (or misstress) he/she surrenders. gives his/her full trust into anothers hands... but... also expects something in return. his full love and attention. his life , so to speak. - i don't want to get what i want - this is about the struggle in the beginning with yourself. WHAT is it that i want??? to BE submissive??? to be on my KNEES? NO !!! i must be crazy. i do not want this. i could not possibly want this... or do i...? - i will ask you to stop, but i am full of lies - it takes a very strong mind to admit that you WANT to be submissive... and that never is easy in the beginning,...when you have not yet fully accepted it about yourself. |

i think it is about life, death, reincarnation, organ transplant and freedom of the soul. - broken people get recycled - if you are dead, and it is possible you still can do so much GOOD, letting others have a longer or better life with the organs that you no longer need. - and i hope that i will - i think that Katie Melua hopes that if the moment should come that when she is dead, that even in death, she would be able to add some good to others lifes. - what we own becomes our prison - when you are very old or very ill, your body (what we "own" ) does not do what the soul/the mind WANTS it to do. so it becomes our prison that prevents us to be free. - my possesions will be gone, back to where they came from - this CAN mean real possesions. things. because when you have died, you can not take them with you. but it can ALSO mean: your body will go away. burried. or burned. ashes to ashes. dust to dust. - see the rock that you hold on to, is it gonna save you ... - the rock...your body, when old or sick, is nothing more than a burdon. still...even the very sick hold on to it, because they are afraid to die. - why do you feel you have to hold on...imagine if you let GO...- imagine...the weight of that sick body gone... imagine the freedom when the spirit is free to fly. no more pain. no more sickness. no more sadness. because sadness is for the ones that are alive. they do not see the whole picture. a soul CAN see the whole picture. so they know, there is so much more than 'just' life. if you listen carefully...there is the sound of a heart beating in this song. and if you notice you will find that at the end, the beating slows down...and stops...even before the song is finished fully. in my opinion, that is the life that has stopped... the soul that has let go of an disfunctioning body... a soul that has chosen freedom...is soaring in the sky, full of light and joy... free...to be born again in a next life. a young life. with new possibilities, new chalenges, new lessons, new chances. and in a way...reincarnation is ALSO a way of 'recycling' - broken people get recycled - a soul...that has been freed from his old or sick body...now free to be NEW again. |
