Aha, I knew this song would have a lot of comments. Afterall, it's extremely controversial, and when God is part of the title?! C'mon. I'm not going to comment about my own interpretation and separately explicate each verse. What I am going to do is share my views - there's a difference. This song basically "disses" God, if I may use this verb loosely. The singer's are clearly portraying their views in which God is selfish, uncaring, and destructive. Forgive me if you are an atheist, or someone who dislikes religions of any sort, but I thought that I'd make it clear; the message that is, that I myself have received from this song. I am a firm believer in God, and I don't agree with any of this nonsense criticzing God, or yet blaming Him for all the bad in this world. I believe that God created mankind, (as the song states oppositely), and that this world we live in is NOT meant to be heaven. It's not meant to be a serene and pristine paradise full of good. There are "no pearly gates", no "heavenly crowns"... This world is a test. A challenge. Did you think that after high school and after university you would be done with exams? With assesments? Even after work? Ha ha. LIFE itself, is the biggest test of all. Those who fail will enter the flaming gates of hell, and those who succeed - we all know where they end up - in the world that these singers believe should have been created for us human beings in the first place. God isn't selfish. We are, as we are curious in nature too. That song is catchy, in fact, I really like it. I may not agree with the message the singer's are trying to portray, but I have learnt to agree to disagree. THAT is what our world needs right now. No justice will come knocking at our doors. No heavens will be waiting for us at the end. WE have to do right, to think right, to act right, in order to really save oursleves a spot in the heavens that God has saved for us at the end. To those who don't believe in God, at least die with the will that you did good in this world. It might sound like I'm the one dissing XTC's views - I'm not. I'm merely stating my overall impression and conclusion. Nevertheless, I do agree that life is unfair, for sure. I am not belying my initial view, I am just being diplomatic. At the end of the day, I love this tune. It's catchy and displays great queries that we should all question. Whether or not you interpret a meaning the same way is not of my concern. This kind of music, these kind of lyrics - they are entertaining. They're what really drive the music industry. Or what should .. . . . . |
