I have read an interview of Alex Ebert in a french magazine in which he explains this songs. He said: "TRUTH : au lieu d’éviter, de cacher mes cotés sombres et ceux du monde, il faut les accepter, les aimer jusqu’à qu’il en ressorte du bon." Which means in english (sorry for my poor english): "TRUTH: instead of avoiding, hidding our dark sides and those of the world, we have to accept them, love them until something good emerges of them."

This beautiful song is a direct reference to ones shadow self, personality, dark side, ego. The idea of being separate from each other in our private sufferings dealing with our shadow self. Its a beautiful song allowing us an opportunity to listen to words intertwined with music, to teach. Even in our darkness we are all beautiful, majestic creatures whom despite the dark we SHINE. WE are YIN YANG. Have faith in ourselves. Shadow Integration is a souls mission while here on earth, I truly believe we can love ourselves unconditionally and move into the light. We are all the eternal. An expression of Existence, with purpose. Even in our darkness lies perfection. Division is an illusion. Your darkness is shining, my darkness is shining. Truth. This song reminds me of Matisyahu and his rap style. It brought a smile to my face when I first heard (saw) it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSF-3OkC-L4 . I really appreciate the wisdom behind the lyrics and the sharing of his journey or struggles with what is the truth. Part of that is embracing the darkness which he finds paradoxically shines. However, accepting this paradox is where the symbolic labels of light and dark falling away to reveal the truth. "Light's blinding" is the most brilliant line. There's the acknowledgement that we build lenses to see life in a certain way and dig trenches to keep us boxed in and unwilling to see his position. Being open and stripping off labels, iconology, religion, affiliations, brings us closer to the our core and what is true.

I think the first line in the first chorus is "Sense this" rather than "Since this", as a play off of "senseless" from the previous line.

scrumptious, you definitely are not hearing things in my opinion. I both hear exactly that on various qualities of listening devices and think the song fully supports that line. "Have faith in myself" No way that the "light" should divide us. God separated the light from the darkness. Truth. My inner "darkness" is shining. Trying to get the love out of religion with out all the hate.

This is going on a limb but the shadow and other references in the first stanza seems to point to a religious background that is no longer believed in. Doing "battle" for god. Made to be stupid. Having to accept the pain.

I imagine the line was too direct and he changed it when he published the "official" lyrics.

I find that it's really a song about general inner struggle that can be applied to anything. I like the idea that it could be about religion but I have been singing these lyrics along with the recording and it all sounds right to me.

Such an underrated song. I think it's beautiful, has a great message, and should be heard by many more people.

I swear it sounds like he says "every little lie in this world comes from the bible" but since you took the lyrics off his page, I guess I'm just hearing things.

i believe this song is about a man that is struggling with people trying to tell him what to do. You have to ask yourself what is it that you really want? Fortune...Fame? Will that do it, or is there something else. Love, thats what he wants nothing else. He only needs her, thats his truth. He only wants to feel the feeling of love, which is the greatest feeling. He is lost without her possibly? As he is searching the world to fill his need of love, but everything is just an illusion. Maybe he is questioning if love is real or only an illusion. He wants to embrace the darkness, because in the end is that all that there is? He is questioning everything he had previously knew, because in the end where did it lead him. Love is his only medication, and thats what made him not question. He wants that feeling again

Love this song. would LIKE to say I love this artist, but truth is he sort of comes off like an ass. Great song though:)
