The Rolling Stones – Rip This Joint Lyrics 1 year ago
Among the other themes, there are a lot of references to and their appreciation of early US music noted in the line ' dig that sound on the radio' .

'This joint' and 'Round and Round ' are similar to lyrics in the Chuck Berry tune of the same name where the opening lyrics are ' The joint was rocking, going round and round" . Berry was a huge influence on them especially Richards.

"Short Fat Fanny' is an old Larry Williams 50's rocker . "Papa said yes, mama said no, no,no " was an old Lee Graves R&B single.

'Flip, flop fit to drop' could also recall the 1955 Big Joe Turner song ' Flip Flop , Fly' with it's chorus ' Flip, flop fly, don't care if I die" .

The Clash – (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais Lyrics 2 years ago
"The new groups are not concerned With what there is to be learned They got Burton suits, ha you think it's funny Turning rebellion into money."

Saw a video on the Jam. It actually is a dig at the Jam's bass player , Bruce Foxton, who always wore Burton style suits.

The Jam toured w the Clash before London Calling. After this song, never again.

Should be " Honey I missed your two time kisses"

I thought it was 'Honey I me missed your two time kisses' which seems to make more sense.

The Velvet Underground – Sweet Jane Lyrics 3 years ago
If you listen closely I think the lines are:

Jack is in a corset, Jane is in her vest,
and me I'm in a rock and roll band.

More sensible too than 'Jane is her vest

The Rolling Stones – Out Of Time Lyrics 5 years ago
This was also the theme song for the Vietnam film 'Coming Home' . In the film, it is the husband ( Bruce Dern) coming home to find his wife in an affair w a wounded vet she met at the VA.

So he was 'Out of Time'.

Good comment. Drugs are referred to generally as 'shit ' often as well . Maybe scraping the shit of your shoes is kicking the habit?

Talking Heads – Life During Wartime Lyrics 8 years ago
My take is it is about what life is like as a civilian or even a revolutionary in some authoritarian state maybe in a civil war. Lots of that going on in 1979 in Central America and Eastern Europe since the start of the cold war.

"Heard of a van that is loaded with weapons," Weapons smuggling
"Heard of some grave sites, out by the highway, A place where nobody knows" Many mass graves in these types of states

"The sound of gunfire, off in the distance, I'm getting used to it now" Govt vs the revolutionaries

"Transmit the message, to the receiver,
Hope for an answer some day
I got three passports, a couple of visas,
You don't even know my real name"

Suggests underground communications as teh state has control over the air waves and you need fake id to get around

"High on a hillside, the trucks are loading,
Everything's ready to roll
I sleep in the daytime, I work in the nighttime,
I might not ever get home"

More clandestine living , moving around under the cover of night like spies. May die and 'never get home'

"You oughta know not to stand by the window
Can't write a letter, can't send no postcard,
Trouble in transit, got through the roadblock,
We blended in with the crowd

Suggests constant state surveillance, threat of snipers, control of information w i n and and outside of the state and restrictions on freedom of movement typical in these regimes. They also sound like they are anti govt forces or spies again w their need to 'blend in'

"We got computers, we're tapping phone lines,
I know that that ain't allowed"

More covert type operations like espionage, information gathering in their war efforts etc

The Who – Baba O'Riley Lyrics 8 years ago
@[PJ10:23645]

I don't know. The UK as a nation were not even involved in Vietnam militarily or in any regard. It was a much larger consciousness in the US obviously.

First verse seems to be sarcasm by young working people towards their more rebellious counterparts who have to 'fight' to prove themselves , who are wrong and then have be 'forgiven'

2nd verse sounds like the exodus of youth to Brighton 'getting together before they get much older'. Put out the fire may just mean moving on after stopping and camping

Teenage wasteland seems to be about all the energy wasted by youth revolt at the time. Sounds like a jab at the hippies and anti establishment

Beautiful poetry is right. His lyrics should be published as poetry on their own. May have been rock music's greatest romantic poet.

The Pogues – Dark Streets Of London Lyrics 8 years ago
Maybe the Pogues best song of all. Very underrated and under the radar. Heard their last few albums & " If I should fall from Grace etc" then a CD store clerk recommended 'Dark Days' at the first mention of the band.

Just a beautiful Irish melody that makes you want to get up and dance.

Steve Earle – Ft. Worth Blues Lyrics 9 years ago
Very beautiful ballad here and agree w the above. Earle on acoustic guitar w not much else except some of his best lyrics ever. To me some of the best lyrics from anyone for that matter.

I think the 1st verse refers to the news of Townes passing would have shut down all the town (Fort Worth where he was born and grew up) if 'they only knew' maybe reflecting that Van Zandt had never received a wider and more deserving recognition.

References to his life are his time living in CO w his parents and at university in Boulder and time spent in TN recording and in and around the Nashville music scene.

The rest is Earle missing his friend while following in his footsteps through the similar studios, bars, coffee houses, halls and other areas the musicians haunt w his mourning being the title of the song.

Yes so true. Steve Earle used to say Townes Van Zandt was the best songwriter ever and a mentor. I think he has a good stake to the claim himself.

Most of the movie references are to cheezy B-rated Sci Fi /horror flicks mainly from the 50s and are in caps in the lyrics. Usually played late nite on community service or local TV channels on a serious budget back in the 70s.

The Day the Earth Stood Still
Flash Gordon
The Invisible Man
King Kong
It came from .. Outer Space
Doctor X
Forbidden Planet
Tarantula

I had the US/Canada released album/cd not the import.

It included the great lines:

Are you taking orders
or are you taking over?
Are you going backward
or are you going forward?

Strummer really knew how to hit the political themes and stir up rebellion

The Rolling Stones – Tumbling Dice Lyrics 9 years ago
A real gem. My favourite Stones song and up there overall too. Not hard to see why Keith Richards said he loved the groove of the song. Love some of their choruses too where it seems like they all join in.

Not sure where the gambling influence came from. Close to Monaco during the recording, the interest in US culture that crept into other songs of the period ( Brown Sugar, Dead Flowers, Honky Tonk Women etc) perhaps.

One meaning I drew was just that the singer seems to be observing his love relations through the eye of a gambler with the highs and lows, the metaphor of cheating in love as in gambling yet love is a gamble worth taking.

" Women .. always trying to waste me,make me burn the candle right down"
(Maybe a reference to the gamble exposes a vulnerability ( chance of loss) and gambling can be timeless as in all night and on end.)

"All you women is low down gamblers, cheating like I don't know how"
(Direct reference to cheating as also in love and life.)

" Deuce is still wild" (2 in cards is wild. Still a chance of drawing a deuce and winning and optimism)

" I can't stay, you got to roll me" (Running out of time in life so let's take a chance ie roll me)

" alwasy in a hurry, never stop to worry" (Gamblers can't dwell on their losses and maybe always in a hurry is from the law, loan sharks or again getting old and running out of time again)

"Don't you see the time flashing by" (he wonders if the girl is also aware of maybe getting old)

"honey , got no money I'm all sixes and sevens and nines"
(He's broke maybe in love. If you roll that order you lose in craps. You have to roll a six 2x before a 7 to win.)

"fever in the funk house" ( a funk is a down spell. maybe reference to more bad luck)

"I'm the rank outsider' ( I am unfavorably ranked ie long shot) " But you can be my partner in crime" ( Would hope for you anyway?)

"Oh, my, my, my, I'm the lone crap shooter, ( Love like craps is a lonely life)

Playin' the field ev'ry night." (Obvious expression for hoping to meet someone in the singles field each night)

"Keep on rollin" ( Keep on trying with me)

Definitely a reference to NY the city. The snow is grimy, grey and dirty and the line is pure sarcasm.

Sounds like the 'wheel' is the court public opinion or consciousness and it could 'name' politicians or critics who maybe on the wrong side of a social issue.

And there were certainly many social issues that divided people in 1964.

A song that the Clash never wrote but seems in keeping w their catalogue. They certainly make it their own especially w the crescending drum roll intro which suits the song theme and the full on affront of their music, maybe the best start of any rock song ever.

David Bowie – Queen Bitch Lyrics 12 years ago
Shiggy listed the actual meaning from Bowie himself. The prostitute is a transvestite picking up the guy the narrator was with. The title also references the homosexual term 'queen' w 'bitch' and shows again the narrator''s scorn and another reference to the prostitute as a woman.

He also refers to the tranvestite as 'she' throughout. If she says 'she can do it, she can do it ' implies the prostitute can comply w a range of sexual experimentation.

Aside from the seediness of the lyrics, a catchy underrated song that is on of his best and one of my favs by anyone.

Was featured at the end of " The Damn United' , a film about Leed's and British soccer in the 70's w Michael Sheen and Colm Meaney.
