Rip This Joint Lyrics

Mama says yes, Papa says no
Make up your mind 'cause I gotta go
I'm gonna raise hell at the Union Hall
Drive myself right over the wall

Rip this joint, gonna save your soul
So round and round and round we go
Roll this joint, gonna get down low
Start my starter, gonna stop the show
Oh, yeah!

Mister President, Mister Immigration Man
Let me in, sweetie, to your fair land
I'm Tampa bound and Memphis too
Short Fat Fanny is on the loose
Dig that sound on the radio
Then slip it right across into Buffalo
Dick and Pat down in old D.C.
Well they're gonna hold some shit for me

Ying yang, you're my thing
Oh, now, baby, won't you hear me sing
Flip Flop, fit to drop
Come on baby, won't you let it rock?
Oh, yeah!

From San Jose down to Santa Fe
Kiss me quick, baby, won'tcha make my day
Down to New Orleans with the Dixie Queen
'Cross to Dallas, Texas with the Butter Queen

Rip this joint, gonna rip yours too
Some brand new steps and some weight to lose
Gonna roll this joint, gonna get down low
So round and round and round we'll go

Wham, bam, Birmingham, Alabam' don't give a damn
Little Rock fit to dro.
Ah, let it rock

For the young'uns who might not know, "Dick and Pat down in old D.C." = Dick and Pat Nixon. Nixon was prez from '69 - "74. Pat was his wife. The old foiks already know that.

Oh man the sax makes me want to convulse...

I like the lyrics on this song a lot, there's good alliteration (flip, flop, fit to drop) and rhymes (kiss me quick baby, won't you make my day? the k sound is repeated) so the overall sound benefits making his ragged singing/shouting enjoyable cause it all flows so nicely

Among the other themes, there are a lot of references to and their appreciation of early US music noted in the line ' dig that sound on the radio' .

'This joint' and 'Round and Round ' are similar to lyrics in the Chuck Berry tune of the same name where the opening lyrics are ' The joint was rocking, going round and round" . Berry was a huge influence on them especially Richards.

"Short Fat Fanny' is an old Larry Williams 50's rocker . "Papa said yes, mama said no, no,no " was an old Lee Graves R&B single.

'Flip, flop fit to drop' could also recall the 1955 Big Joe Turner song ' Flip Flop , Fly' with it's chorus ' Flip, flop fly, don't care if I die" .

Rolling Stones are going to tour America again and in typical self confidence, are promising to "Rip This Joint". In other words, to put the place upside down. And so it happened of course.

oh yeah i forgot to mention the drug references in this song: pot (roll this joint) and an unknown (they're gonna hold some shit for me).

Maybe it's about drugs getting into the country as a metaphor for musicians getting into the country...musicians WITH drugs...and touring?
