Stunning song. It's amazing that a brash, loud, screamo band like In This Moment produced something like this. Maria actually sounds better singing than she does screaming. And I agree with the other poster, the unplugged version is the best.
As for the lyrics, this describes that phase after a breakup where you feel lonely and don't know what to do or where to go from there perfectly. |

Meaning 1: Addiction. This perfectly describes either how a person feels when going through withdrawal after quitting an addiction, or how they feel when they're too deep in said addiction and feel like they can't get out of it. Meaning 2: The loss of a relationship. The partner is "something I can never have" after he/she leaves him, be it by getting together with someone else, a big argument and fall out, or death.
Whatever the meaning, is, this is the most depressing song I've ever heard and that's why I love it. The combination of the gloomy instrumentation and the anguish Trent puts into his vocals is something to behold! |

Kinda scary how these lyrics seem to describe the mindset of the person behind the gun of a school or theater shooting. The person feels screwed over and left out by society and has given up on life but wants to take the people he hated with him ("I know I'm headed for the bottom, but I'm riding you all the way") while getting his 10 minutes of fame ("this time I'm sure you'll know that I'm here).
These shootings are becoming way too common nowadays. This song shows what a dark place these people come from. Stop bullying and be considerate of peoples' feelings! |

What a song. The riff and bassline are downright filthy and are probably the filthiest Soundgarden have ever written next to 4th of July and Beyond the Wheel.
The lyrics seen to be speaking from the point of someone/something to someone/something they know needs them to survive, or to someone/something that is obsessed with them and blindly follows them. Examples include a drug to a person addicted to it, religion to a follower of said religion, or even between a couple in some situations. Genius lyrics once again by Chris! |

I definitely see the interpretation about poking fun at music critics (or any critics for that matter), but the lyrics are open enough to see other interpretations as well. I can also see it being about being suppressed (possibly from first impressions, given the "it's your moment in time that defines and deforms you" line) and being frustrated about it.

I agree that this song may be about a relationship gone bad, but it doesn't have to be confined to that. It could be about someone who's done with all the drama in any friendship, and realizes he's above the person he's feuding with. Either way, it's the best Mad Season s song to me. Long live Layne.
Thank goodness I stumbled upon this song while I was about done with one of my friends who kept lying to me, even though I gave her many chances. It helped me realize that I'm above her and I don't have to deal with this crap anymore. |

Brilliant song. Ville's and Lauri's voices contrast and complement each other well, and the music conveys a feeling of agony and sadness which suits the lyrics perfectly.
I interpret the lyrics as a "mind says no but body says yes" situation. Ville sings as the part of a man that wants to stay away from a woman because he knows she is or will be trouble. Lauri sings as the part of him that's still infatuated/in love with her. |

To me, the lyrics seem to just say that it's okay to cry when in times of trouble, but also hints in the last verse that it's going to be alright.
This song has a theraputic quality to it, always makes you feel better when you're down by giving you hope through that last verse. Bravo once again, Chris. |

My favorite song of all time. The solo and the rest of the song after the solo are sonic bliss and perfection.
The lyrics show Cornell's genius. I can see two distinct meanings out of the same words. I can see it being about some form of leaving, be it suicide or leaving someone, through lyrics like "one last sin before I'm dead," "sleep tight for me, I'm gone," "have to say goodbye," and "fell too far to start again." However, as much as I hate to just label a song as a drug song, it could just as easily be that due to imagery like "black or burning sun" and "shadow face, blowing smoke and talking wind." |

First off, this is the one of the best songs ever... Cornell, Arm, and Staley in one song is too good to be true!
To me, it seems to be about a relationship gone bad or one that didn't work out. It could also be about a relationship that got close but never actually materialized. The first two verse show that both sides feel bad about the situation. The last verse (where Cornell shows his stuff) seems to suggest either cheating or taking a "gamble" with the girl by making a move and failing ("flat on your face and into the fire"). |
