The Soft Boys – I Wanna Destroy You Lyrics 2 years ago
I could see it being a rant against neo-nazis and neo-fascists especially coming into the 80s with the rise of folks like Thatcher and Reagan etc.

First verse refers to the nationalism of the early 20th century all over Europe (not just Germany), and how fascists prey on nationalist pride to justify attacks against some kind of enemy. And how their movement relies on having a bad guy to hate and kill, and it all leads back to arousing violence.

Second verse talks about how the media will just report the approved talking points that justify whatever foreign war the government is doing now. These become the talking points that everyone spouts when they talk about it, no further thought other than what the TV told them was right.

Outro (and chorus in general) drives home the idea that fascism must be destroyed completely like cancer. But the irony is not lost on me that "I must destroy you to the very last atom" is itself a violent statement. Draw your own conclusions there but it cannot be denied that an ideology designed on manipulation and violence cannot be talked into submission and defeat.

Just my two cents since nobody else has an opinion to offer.

I have no explanation for all the lyrics but I'll be damned if a lot of it doesn't sound like an acid trip of some kind. And I know it feels alright too haha.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre – Stars Lyrics 8 years ago
Seems like a straightforward song about someone obsessively infatuated with someone else. The BJM, however talented, don't always have super deep meanings in their music, although maybe there's something I'm not picking up here.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre – Ballad of Jim Jones Lyrics 8 years ago
I'm not entirely satisfied with the explanations here, so I'll throw in my interpretation of the lyrics.

I think it's all about a stereotypical person who would very easily and perfectly fall for Jim Jones's crazy cult.

The first verse outlines how he's a wanderer type of person, directionless and without any real home. You could infer that he doesn't fit in well, or at least hasn't found somewhere to fit in yet.

The second verse talks about another characteristic of someone who could be fooled by a cult. He talks about how living is getting bad, so obviously he isn't satisfied with his own life, and maybe how life and society is in general. The "don't make me mad" line could possibly be a reference to how he doesn't get along with others, but I'm not so sure on that one.

The final verse I think is when Anton finally gets around to referring to how this guy gets totally brainwashed. He's looking for direction, turning to any and all religions for the direction in life they offer. He eventually goes with Jim Jones, and we all know how that turned out. The Jesus line confuses me, but someone else said it could be about how people came from other religions and now that he's dead, he's back with Jesus. Again, not sure about that one. But I do think the final lines are explicitly about how he's fallen for the cult BS. He fell in deep but learned how to swim, could refer to maybe he was thrown off at first by the strangeness, but eventually it grew on him as his brain was washed. And the final line "now there's no one who's cleaner than me or than him" is about going to the pure beautiful afterlife that Jim promised all his followers before they all committed "revolutionary suicide".

That's a big analysis, but if I had to read into the whole thing and give a meaning and purpose behind all the lines, that would be my take on it. It's a beautifully catchy and happy song nonetheless, even if the narrative is possibly very dark.

Nirvana – You Know You're Right Lyrics 8 years ago
@[kittysixx:18254] I agree with @ornicus107 as well.

Another thought I had was that the whole "killing himself to immortalize his music" thing is pretty ridiuclous. Like that's pretty much the biggest selfish sell-out thing a person could concieve of. There's no way he'd do that. He was in a very very bad place, and the pressures of fame, heroin, and his personal life with Courtney pushed him over the edge. He didn't care about the fame, he hated it. Look up why he even wrote In Utero the way he did. He wanted to get rid of all the fans who had bandwagoned onto the popularity of Nevermind by making a noise album. The fact that his music was so incredibly big and known everywhere was a contributing factor to why he felt so awful towrad the end. The limelight hurt him like no other.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre – No Come Down Lyrics 9 years ago
I think it's pretty simple, just a song about getting so goddamn trashed you feel like you're gonna die. And so he's waiting to come down from it so he can feel better and maybe kick the ass of the guy who gave him whatever he's on. Of course he talks a lot about Jesus and stuff because he's close to death, and the song is called No Come Down, so maybe we could infer that he doesn't make it back down. Maybe there's more to it than that, but that's what I'm reading. Great song, Anton really knows how to take 3 chords and turn them into a catchy and psychedelic tune.

Radiohead – Trans-Atlantic Drawl Lyrics 9 years ago
All I know is I wish the first half was a fully fleshed out song and the other half would become its own full instrumental. Both parts are so good but it's a let down because they both could be great individual songs. But I guess the band felt the other way on this one.

The Apples in Stereo – About Your Fame Lyrics 10 years ago
Really obvious that it's about someone that became famous and they changed, and the narrator is wondering if there's anything left of the person they used to know. Whether this song has any backstory is something I'm unsure of. This and is awesome though.

The Apples in Stereo – Green Machine Lyrics 10 years ago
It seems pretty obvious to me that it's about growing up fast and realizing that being young and carefree doesn't last forever, and feeling that longing to be a kid again.
