Jayme Dee – Rules Lyrics 12 years ago
This is surely about Katniss and Peeta. I feel it spans all three books, but mostly The Hunger Games and Mockingjay.

The first para is from Peeta's POV. This is suitable for The Hunger Games.

You say you know love, but you are just reflecting words you hear - Peeta really believed Katniss loved him but found out it was all only an act. She was simply echoing his love.

No iron in your veins to give you any sense of pain or fear - Since she was only pretending to be in love with him, he feels she has no real emotion at all and doesn't really bother about his feelings.

It's just another lie, it's just another calculation - He feels her love was a lie, another tactic she used to win sponsors. Literally a carefully planned and calculated move.

And when the power's out, we're just another old sensation - Without all the 'star-crossed lovers' drama, it's just another publicity stunt.

The second para is from Katniss' POV. This is closer to Mockingjay (ya, it seems to jump around a lot without a definite order). This is when Peeta has been hijacked and how Katniss feels about it all.

This blood keeps me alive, but what is it that runs through you / Electricity and wires, dictating everything you do - Like how blood runs through our bodies and keeps us alive and healthy, Katniss feels that since the they are trying to bring back Peeta's memories, it's just all the wires connected to him that's keeping him sane and alive.

You tell me that you hear me and all your memories are real,
But how do I know you don't just feel what you've been told to feel? - Even though people keep telling Katniss that Peeta's condition is improving, she believes that everything he feels and knows is only the result of information he is being told and fed, nothing on his own.

The above two lines can be interpreted from Peeta's POV too (again pertaining to The Hunger Games. Yes, I know it's a little jumpy!). Peeta feels that even though Katniss tries to convince him, she is only acting in love because she's been told to.

We run around the rules,
We run around the rules,
We run around the rules,
Round and round, two by two, we run around the rules - They have to play by the rules of the Games. 'Two by two' refers to the rule created in Katniss and Peeta's first Games that two tributes from the same district can become victors.

The fourth para is again from Katniss' POV concerning Peeta, the first two lines about her false love and the second two about his hijacking. (Yes, I know, it's kinda jumbled up, but that's how I'm making sense of it.)

There's water in your eyes and I know I'm the reason that it's there - Katniss knows that she is the reason why Peeta is upset. She knows she hurt him when she lied to him about loving him.

But still I don't feel bad because I know that you have more to spare - Katniss doesn't feel too bad about it though, because she feels it was taken for granted that she also loves Peeta, when she did not.

And just behind your eyes are switches that can turn back on - Referring to the tracker jacker venom used to distort Peeta's memories.

To clear away today 'til all your memories are gone - The extremely strong dosage of the venom given to Peeta washed out his memories and completely changed the way he perceived things.

Once again, I know my interpretation is really jumpy between the first and last books, but this is only my interpretation. There are others which may or may not make more sense. But I hop this helped anyways! Comments and opinions will be appreciated! Thanks!

The Civil Wars – Kingdom Come Lyrics 12 years ago
So, this is definitely about the Careers and Katniss.

Run, run, run away / Buy yourself another day - The careers are mocking Katniss and telling her to try and escape them so she can survive for one more day.

A cold wind whispering secrets in your ear / So low, only you can hear - The atmosphere is cold and tense as Katniss has to be on her toes all the time. She could get attacked anytime and she has to be prepared t escape.

Run, run, run and hide / Somewhere no one else can find - Again, the Careers are teasing Katniss, telling her to run and hide from them.

Tall trees bend their lean pointing where to go / Where you will still be all alone - The trees seem to bend in a direction to show the way where Katniss can hide, but even there she is alone with no one to help her.

Don't you fret my dear / It'll all be over soon / I'll be waiting here / For you - There are two interpretations.Since this song concerns the Careers, it could be Clove telling Katniss that she'll be waiting for her (Katniss) and that she is going to kill her, but Katniss needn't worry because her death will be quick. Another interpretation is, as someone before me said in their comment, Katniss' mom telling her not to worry and it will get over soon, and then Katniss can come back home where her mom will be waiting for her.

Run fast if you can / No one has to understand - Yet again, the Careers taunting Katniss, telling her to run as fast as she can to escape them. There is nothing to understand here. It's survival of the fittest. You have to keep yourself from getting killed.

Fly high across the sky from here to kingdom come / Fall back down to where you're from - You can even fly if you want, fly as far and as long as you want, but you're gonna have to come down eventually and then we'll kill you.

The rest of the song is just repetition of some of the lines. Hope you like my interpretation! Comments and opinions will be appreciated.

Punch Brothers – Dark Days Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is from Katniss' perspective. A sort of protective warning to her mother and sister about the evils lurking around and to protect themselves from it.

Mother, listen to my heart / Just as one beat ends, another starts / You can hear no matter where you are : I feel this is about how quiet and lonely District 12 is. So quiet you can hear each other's heartbeat.

Sister, hide our love away / From the evil we both know - Katniss is telling her little sister, Prim, to safeguard the love they have for each other so that it does not get affected by the 'evil (they) both know' (and, frankly, everybody in Panem knows) i.e. the Reaping, the Hunger Games, the Capitol.

It can see you through these dark days / Though they seem to darken as I go : Their love will be their main mode of survival and hope for a better future, even though the present is getting worse.

Our love will see us through these dark, dark days sister / 'Till it lights the way back home : This love they share and protect will help them and lead them to a brighter tomorrow.

It can turn the whole world upside down / Shake it 'til the sky falls to the ground : The Games created by the Capitol has such an adverse effect on the people and those who were chosen to fight (Tributes) and survived (Victors) get so shaken up from the trauma, they find it hard to get out of it ; they are scarred for life

We don't have to reap the fear they sow / Friends, as long as we hide our love away / In the good they'll never know : The goal of these Games are to create fear in people - fear of the Capitol and a fear for the lives of their children. We don't need to be afraid if we hide this love of ours from those who might take it away - hide it in our affection and care, the 'good' that those in the Capitol will never know. It is something they don't understand since they see the Hunger Games as a mode of entertainment - making children kill other children.

They rest of it is just a repetition of the first two paragraphs. This is just my interpretation, but hope it helps. I would appreciate your comments and opinions. Thanks!

Coldplay – Atlas Lyrics 12 years ago
CAUTION : SPOILERS!!

I feel the song's basically about the beginning of rebellion and also about the responsibility Katniss feels towards the 'downtrodden' people of the districts of Panem.

The first stanza is about the different perspectives of the rebellion.
Some saw the sun - some people saw the rebellion as an end to the Capitol's tyranny and the beginning of a better, brighter future.
Some saw the smoke - some people were not as optimistic; they felt a rebellion was unnecessary, that it'll only bring about more chaos than there already is.
Some heard the gun - more or less the same meaning, they were afraid of the dangers of the rebellion, like people getting hurt or getting killed.
Some bent the bow - some people were brave enough to join the rebels and fight against the Capitol.

Sometimes the wire / must tense for the note - sometimes we HAVE to be aggressive to win.
Caught in the fire, say oh / we're about to explode - the people are being tortured by the Capitol and the Hunger Games, and they can't take it anymore. The whole country of Panem is on the brink of a (second) major rebellion and one wrong move from the Capitol - or one right move from the right leader - can trigger a reaction so massive, it can crumble President Snow's government and change the future of Panem.

Carry your world / I'll carry your world - This is from Katniss' perspective. Her one act of defiance with the nightlock berries in the 74th Hunger Games arena caused uprisings in some districts. She realises she has given an opportunity for the people to rebel against the Capitol. She has become "a symbol of hope" for the people, so she must now lead the people of Panem to rebel against President Snow - a HUGE responsibility for a seventeen-year-old girl.

Some far away / Some search for gold - Some people go in search of things that can help them survive in their world - money, food and stuff.
Some dragon to slay - the dragon is President Snow/The Capitol which has to be destroyed in order to live peaceful lives.
Heaven, we hope, is just up the road - the people are pining for a life where there are no troubles, no Hunger Games, no starvation...and they are hoping to get such a life as soon as possible, because they are tired of being condescended and treated like slaves.
Show me the way, Lord / 'cause I, I'm about to explode - This is again from Katniss' perspective. She is trying to find a solution to lead the people to freedom, to their (hopefully better) future.

Carry your world and all your hurt - Katniss bears the weight of the whole of Panem and also the grief and anger of the people, as she is their leader, their symbol of hope, their Mockingjay.

Whoever is reading this, hope this helps you in understanding the lyrics. It's a beautiful song by Coldplay and truly captures the essence of the series.

The Low Anthem – Lover Is Childlike Lyrics 12 years ago
I know this song's been written for The Hunger Games, but I can't help but connect it to Mockingjay. I see this song from Finnick Odair's POV, like he's talking about his lover, Annie Cresta.

"Meet me down by the whale watch
.........by the sea
.........we'll go out on the sea"

See? everything is related to District 4's occupation - fishing, the sea, whales...

"My lover is childlike" - well basically, the Games have left Annie all messed up and traumatized (since she's also a victor). So naturally, she's kinda scared and naive....she needs someone to help her out, she needs proper care and love to somehow bring her out of the post-Games trauma. Just like a child who has experienced something scary and can't forget about it for a long time.

That's all I got....hope this helps atleast a little bit...

Glen Hansard – Take the Heartland Lyrics 12 years ago
Glen Hansard tweeted once that he had written two songs after reading The Hunger Games - (quoting) ..."Take the Heartland was for the scene where the tributes are dropped into the hunger games..."

Okay, so based on this, here's my interpretation. I'm still not clear about a lot of things in this song, its kinda confusing, but i'll try my best.

"And keep my friends real close..." - first they form alliances (mainly the Careers)
"Throw my friends down in the ditches..." - kinda like what Cato did...he and Glimmer seemed to be very close, but when they were all attacked by the tracker jackers, and Glimmer was caught, Cato didn't even try to save her ; just abandoned her and left her to die. (sorry, i kinda ship Climmer/Glato :P)

"Take the Heartland with a sense of revenge.....make it look easy.....we'll die in the end" - technically, a heartland is "the part of a region considered essential to the viability and survival of the whole, especially a central land area relatively invulnerable to attack and capable of economic and political self-sufficiency." basically it refers to the Cornucopia. Its got all the supplies for all the tributes. but after the initial bloodbath, the Careers end up occupying the Cornucopia and a bit of the surrounding area. They of course do it with vengeance and they "make it look easy" since this is the only thing they've trained for their whole lives. so obviously they can kill the other tributes with real ease. but they also know there is a chance they might "die in the end" after all.

Sorry, this is all i really understood in the song. About Che Guevara and Fidel Castro...where did they come from? absolutely no idea! But i hope whatever i could make of this song helped. sorry i couldnt get more.
