R.E.M. – Losing My Religion Lyrics 10 years ago
Stipe stated the catch phrase and title of this song came from a southern expression. I know it well having grown up in the Alabama. If someone said, "you're about to make me lose my religion (or, often, Christianity)!" They were angry and exasperated with you or the situation and it was about to get ugly. This song came out about a year before the conclusion of my first long term relationship. When I heard Stipe's explanation and compared the songs words with my feelings and actions during the break up period it lined up perfectly. "That's me in the corner; that's me In the Spotlight..." I was so angry and confused that in social situations around this girl I drew attention to myself by withdrawing and then by lashing out somehow in front of everyone. "Oh no, I've said too much; I haven't said enough." I would so often want to talk to this girl to win her back or to apologize and would end up saying stuff and more than needed that pushed her away but I always felt I didn't say what I should've. "What if all the fantasies come flaming to ground?" I felt like I was losing everything i'd hoped we'd experience together and her family had also become a replacement family for me in many ways. Losing the relationship meant losing all those relationships too. I realize Stipe probably had many meanings built into this song. We good writer, which he is, will purposely write things so that yes, there maybe a specific idea he had for all the lyrics, but the songs can have several different meanings to connect with people. He nailed it on this one. For me the cultural meaning of "losing my religion" rings true and I really think that's the inspiration by he cleverly wrapped it up Ina package poetry that can be seen to mean something deeper or metaphorical.

Alanis Morissette – Ironic Lyrics 12 years ago
Hmmm.
I still feel al the situations fall under this definition Merriam-Webster.
incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result (2) : an event or result marked by such incongruity.
Our perception of what would happen makes it ironic. The old man turning 98 and winning lottery does not lead one to the conclusion he's gonna die tomorrow. Therefore it is an unexpected result, not of the results of the events, but in what is expected.

James Taylor – Another Day Lyrics 12 years ago
Not my interpretation of His meaning but what this songs to me.
As most know, JT had a girlfriend named Suzanne that the first verse of "Fire and Rain" is about her death. Likewise, my first long relationship was with a Suzanne and unfortunately she died in a car accident. so that song is special to me as well. In my mind these songs are about the same person...
When I first heard this song it immediately brought me back to a very dreadful night in my life soon after i graduated from high school.
Suzanne (which yes, I did call suzy from time to time) lived literally down the street from me. A Friend of mine and I had gone and come back from a day trip to the beach. That night i returned and I over heard my dad "praying". He did not know I was there. He had just tried to OD on some prescription meds in order to take his own life. I went and found my step-mom, and she confronted him. He left our house on foot. I contacted the man that lived across from suzanne and we started to search for my Dad. Eventually, and very late, paramedics had located him very near suzanne's house. They determined, dad was going to be sick but fine. I remember Suzanne coming out of our house with her parents and looking at me with tears in her eyes and us embracing. That night i spent at the neighbor's - I did not want to be at my home. The next morning i was able to spend with Suzanne which was probably about the best thing following the previous night. Okay, so that's the first time I've ever written that out... therapeutic.

Natalie Merchant – The Letter Lyrics 12 years ago
This song out of all the songs on Tigerlily pulled me in the most. I loved the whole feeling of that album. Natalie's voice is so haunting and the whole album kind of pulled me in though most of the songs I don't connect to the messages or stories directly. The album had a kind of negative effect on me though - made me melancholy. However, I was very drawn to it.
This song though I loved. The simplicity, and no chorus, just three simple verses of regret, reluctant gratitude, and a helplessness at not being able to reconnect.
I think it is interesting that this type of situation is so much rarer now due to our global connectivity. We can usually check up on friends and past "lovers" even if not connecting with them directly (Facebook, twitter...)We can "find them" there most of the time.

Dawes – It's A Little Bit Of Everything Lyrics 12 years ago
The first verse is plainly obvious about someone attempting suicide. He's Joining "a dempgraphic" in other words becoming a statistic. He's hoisting his leg up over the rail of the bridge where he's standing. It is then an phone call is made and police show up.

agree with cwhitcomb, I like both songs, but this song is not like "Long December" except for maybe the tempos are close. The two bands have two distinct sounds mainly defined by the song writing and the texture of their singers' voices. Again those are exceptionally unique to each.
