Definitely think that this is another song about O'Callaghan's tendency to really not go with the American "norm" of life. The song is a little subtle about it, but definitely enunciates the fact that John doesn't feel like he fits in with the average man his age in that he doesn't want to waste his time chasing love or women at all. He knows that he is almost alone in this feat and is trying the reveal that he doesn't care about finding a woman, but really wishes that he was like everyone else in this struggle. "all the boys are alive, all the boys are with girls" ---everyone John's age is finding love, and gaining electricity from it. John states this as to juxtapose himself, as he is not with a woman. "if i am not a man what am i then" --this is john saying that the fact that he is not preoccupied with woman makes him not a man. since he is not a "man" due to his lack of interest in love, he is asking what he should be defined as, or precisely, who he should identify with. |

| Nick Santino & The Northern Wind – Goddamn Lyrics | 12 years ago |

I think this song is about the humility and hate you have for yourself when you know that you would take someone back even though they weren't fair to you in the relationship. Throughout the song, Nick says how much he hates himself for having the feelings that he is having and then continues to remind the girl he singing about that if she ever decides to come back he will always want her. He is admittedly proclaiming that he knows that wanting the girl back isn't really the right thing but that his heart is "making him this way" and that he can't do anything but watch the girl go away. he has no idea of how to see how the girl feels. All he knows is that he would accept her after all the pain that she has caused him, which is an embarrassing but relevant truth. He is letting his guard down. He is truly saying I can't stop thinking about you or missing you even though the girl left him broken and destroyed. I really believe that he wishes that he could simply move on. |

| The Maine – These Four Words Lyrics | 12 years ago |

There is a lot of controversy in this band over lead singer John O'Callaghan's sexual orientation. However, I think it is clear that John is somewhat asexual. Whether he has not allowed himself to like girls or whether he feels no sexual attraction, he hasn't had serious relationships or at least has not mentioned or expressed them. I see "These Four Words" as O'Callaghan's mature claim to who he is. As being the Maine's fourth studio album, they have come a long way from CSWS, in which O'Callaghan admitted his asexuality during the 2008 Vans Warped Tour. Even though the opening line of this song appears childish, the fact that John is blatantly expressing his need of self sexual satisfaction rather than intimacy with another human, he really is almost making fun of himself for being asexual. I don't think it's something John wanted, and in fact I think he's quite ashamed of himself as he is a pretty large sex icon in the eyes of his fans and cannot live up to this. John continues his proclamation throughout the song, "I can't take my heart someplace it won't go" could defintely be seen as John being unable to find attraction or commitment to a girl, but I personally see it in terms of the fact that he physically is unable to be sexually attached to any other person other than himself. Again, I really think John is ashamed of his asexuality as he calls himself a "boy" in the second verse and is reducing himself to a childlike figure that cannot possibly take sexual commitment or action. In the end, John has recently stated in interviews that this is the most personal song he has ever written. Yes, he did write it without the help of any other members of The Maine. At first, I questioned John, thinking his work in Pioneer was surely more emotional than These Four Words, but after connecting it to his fight over his own sexuality, this was almost a complete outing of John as an asexual to his fanbase. John, I love you. Keep shining :) |
