Well it's simple, in my opinion, the singer has found the love of his life, maybe his soulmate, but they are not together anymore.That hurts him and he has realized that he can do nothing to change things and their break up was inevitable, like fate, so he says'' we are born to be together, torn apart'' believing that even though they are apart they connect in some way too . |

Well he sings about the river Clyde (well there’s a river that runs through Glasgow). The Clyde, apparently, torns Glasgow into two halves ( makes her but it breaks her and takes her into the parks and her current just like my blood flows). The one is full of fun (well on one side all the lights glow and the folks know and the kids go where the music and the drinking starts), the other is a lonely place (on the other side where no cars goup to the hills that stand alone) or this is how he sees it. And he is in love and he can't go to meet his lover and only has memories (well the sun sets late in Glasgow and the daylight and the city part and I think of you in Glasgow cos you’re all that’s safe, you’re all that’s warm in my restless heart), so he feels helpless and hopeless (well i would swim but the river is so wide and I’m scared I won’t make it to the other side well God knows I’ve failed but He knows that I’ve tried i long for something that’s safe and warm but all I have is all that is gone i’m as helpless and as hopeless as a feather on the Clyde) . That's the meaning for the Feather on the Clyde for me :) |

I totally agree with you. The song is not about Icarus. If you want to connect the myth with the song I've got an idea. The wings of Icarus were made of wax, but this didn't stop him from going close to the sun cause he thought sun is beautiful and the view from a higher point is better. Also many teenagers are willing to do something they found cool, even though sometimes it appears to be dangerous (flying close to the sun),cause they don't know their limits. |
