| October Project – Ariel Lyrics

*smacks self in head* It's from The Tempest. I can't believe this haunting song has been a small but significant of my life for so long without my making the connection, because OF COURSE Shakespeare is the kind of guy who's going to find his way to front and center of the lyrics of a band like this. So yeah, in case you were similarly afflicted: Ariel. Troubled enslaved spirit. Prospero and stuff. |

No idea whatsoever what this song is about. It's a lot harder to figure out than some of his stuff.*
*The above sarcasm should not in any way be interpreted as a dis on Tom Petty |

| Vienna Teng – Never Look Away Lyrics

Wow. Vienna Teng has been one of my favorite artists for years, but I'd have to say that she's outdone herself with this song. It's both one of her furthest excursions into electronica territory to date -- a relatively new thing for her, but one that she does just as well as she does most of the other styles she's tried on for size -- and one of the first songs I've ever encountered that is capable of making me either dance around the room or shed a few tears of joy, depending on my mood. (Yeah, I'm a big sap.)
The lyrics aren't particularly opaque and get even less so as the song progresses, so I won't bother with an interpretation, but I'll say this much: there are some wonderful turns of phrase and melody here, from that alliteration in the second verse to that insanely cathartic bridge ("some we light on fire...")
Great song, great album, terrifically talented artist. |

| Jem – 24 Lyrics

Amazing song that has stayed with (and even occasionally haunted) me through the years. I love the countdown between the lyrics and 24 bell tolls. It's a simple enough idea, but it's ridiculously well executed.
I don't believe for a moment that it's about a self-imposed (suicidal) deadline, and while I'm usually among the first to see songs in terms of romantic relationships, I don't think it's really about that either: it MAY be addressed to a lover, but the plea to live with more immediacy and passion strikes me as much more universal. I picture it as addressed to all of the narrator's close friends at the very least.
I still find myself wondering who the "he" is. It could be a doctor who is delivering the worst possible news after an accident, but the specificity of the deadline makes me think more along supernatural lines. In fact, it would have fit in so perfectly with the heroine's plight in the 2009 horror flick "Drag Me To Hell" that it would have been either a genius call for the end credits or a little bit TOO on the money. |

Sixteen years later, this song still haunts the fuck out of me, and I never even had to deal with any of what it talks about. It is so profoundly sad, beautiful, regretful, and human. Its poetic license based on the (fortunately less tragic) events that inspired it is excused ten times over. It's great art...full stop. |

I think I'm supposed to think they're going to say something besides "smile" when they get to "She had the most amazing..." but I can't figure out what it is. I mean, what makes sense there that rhymes with "rash"? "cash"? "gash"? (ouch!) "hash"?

| Imogen Heap – You Know Where to Find Me Lyrics

This one is just poetic as all hell. There are more than a few songs out there that deal with supportiveness -- "Here" by Pet Shop Boys is a personal favorite -- but few that go here: "Don't mistake my charity / For what it is / A deep need to be needed / Necessary." She's reminding us that it's just as mutually destructive not to accept love when we need it as it is not to offer it when we can, because that need is not a one-way street. It's all too easy to forget. |
