The singer seems to have ended up back at the girl's place for some late night action and has fallen in love in the process. It seems wrong to fall in love after one night ("Love found through love gone wrong") but now he's hooked ("Cause baby I've made plans to stay the rest of my life"). I'm a college student and I've had several experiences like this after a night downtown at the bars. The only untold part of the story within this song is whether or not she feels the same way about him in the end. My mind was wrapped around this girl I hooked up with one night, and the only thing that enabled me to get over her was realizing she didn't feel the same way, which is why whenever I see her downtown nowadays, there's always a new guy. Funny how the human mind can mix love and infatuation so often. |

I feel like John is showing us the transition he may be going through in his life at this point in time. "It's just a phase...It's not forever...but I still might have a ways to go." On the surface, this song allows us to believe that he sees alcohol as a way to numb the pain of his uncomfortable transition through life. I also think he's trying to say that he has more to learn as things change. He's stumbling over the transitional problems he's facing, just as a drunk person (who has had a little too much whiskey, whiskey, whiskey) might stumble over obstacles that seem so simple to overcome. This is definitely one of his deeper songs and I think it can apply to anyone who may be going through an uncomfortably awkward stage in their life. |
