after reading other ppls opinions here, I kinda changed what I thought this song is about. I always thought it was about a soldier coming back form (the vietnam?) war. you know, how all the abuses amercan soldiers saw/perpetrated themselves while in the battlefield, how they killed, slain, ripped and torn 'the enemy', fairly just regular people, arguably some of them not even fighting back, how they raped women and 'rob all of what they could take in'... and then came back form that 'living hell', to find their country turned its back on them and gave them nothing, and now they are on drugs and only have sex with whores, out the back of an ally... and they're broken, abandoned and torned, people need to think about what happens with human beings when they're at war and how that affects you, some of those men will never be the same. that's how I see it. |

I think this song is about how difficult it is to young adults to understand what's going on in the world, because there's a point where you realize that your view of things is so ridiculously biased by media and government, you're TOLD to be OK with anything the US does outside its own borders... you don't really know if you should support 'your homeland country' or criticize it. People growning up, they're not kids/teens anymore, they're travelling abroad, playing in all countries around the world, seeing what happens anywhere in the world and how America has affected other countries SO MUCH, politically (veto right at the UN?), economically (FR, CityBank?), culturally (movies, heavy/rock bands?), and socially (internet/facebook?), and they start thinking... you know.. 'do we really understand what's going on with this world? or are we just hearing a part of the story? are we getting the whole picture OR NOT?' 'are we 'harboring the meek''? to me this line has always meant that they feel the American people are told to 'harbor'/'caress'/'cuddle' 'the meek', but they're actually harboring a wild beast that could turn against them and eat them whole in one crunch. I don't really know how to explain this right, because I'm not a natural english speaker, so I'll try my best, bare with me, please. It's like americans are 'convinced' by media/factual power/gov't that 'everything is OK, America is on top of things/you don't need to worry about anything', and then, 'out of the blue' (not quite, actually) BANG, twin towers down... you see what I'm saying? 'Are we harboring the meek?'!!! I know this song was written far before 9/11 but, even back then, they (and prolly many others too) were wondering.. 'are we doing things right? or are we just led... to harbor what is told to us to be 'the meek' but it's actually a wild animal?' where's the truth to what's going on in the world today? I think Phil just realized they don't have an 'actual/real' way of finding out, so that's why the question haunts him, because he has no answer for it. Ok, I got a bit too long, sorry... its what I think about it. |

| I think Phil just got tired of watching TV and is thinking about crashing his head into the m/fn thing. | |
