I beg to differ with Cantabile's interpretation of the first line. "Until the lion learns to speak the tales of hunting will be weak" is in no way calling out other artists. It's a statement that has its roots in feminism; if only one side of a narrative is told, the story will be weak. The more perspectives given, the closer to reality a narrative is. So, when he says "Until the lion learns to speak the tales of hunting will be weak" we understand that tales of hunting are only given from the perspective of the hunter, and not the hunted. These tales are this limited and one-sided. Until we understand the lion's perspective on the hunt, the story is incomplete. It has nothing to do with calling out other artists: k'naan is not so arrogant. It has everything to do with hearing all sides of a story and understanding that one perspective is just that, and not complete. |
