Bright Eyes – Lime Tree Lyrics 9 years ago
"but I keep going out".

This line kills me Everytime. There's so much heartache in it. It implies a world of emotion. It brings to mind the thoughts I had when I was tackling alcoholism. No matter how pure my heart and mind were, I always ended up "going out". I always found myself in situations that would erase my issues.
And the line about sleeping next to a stranger exhibits the emotional turmoil that is born from that lifestyle. A life trying to fulfill that space of heartache that never fulfills itself. The morning after, at "8 AM" you are back in the same place you tried to escape. But it'll perpetuate itself over and over

Conor Oberst – Gossamer Thin Lyrics 9 years ago
I guess this is a pretty straightforward song but let's take a look at it anyway. The phrase Gossamer Thin takes on three different meanings in the verses.
The first describes a bohemian lifestyle of freedom and carelessness. The typical life of an artist surrounded by those who praise them. The verse brings to mind an image of obsession with a person with great talent. His entourage covers him with adoration (while his wife is in dismay over the group). They're gossamer thin, or shallow, in their love for him. Just simple groupies who may not truly understand the artist like his wife does. I wonder if this is about Conor's marriage. He's surrounded by people who can't fulfill him.
The second verse describes a Love affair that Conor admits he can't really understand the way they do. He passes no judgement, but asserts that they are gossamer thin in their own way. In this example I think he intends to say that they are simply on (Gossamer) thin ice with their recklessness, and it is bound to crack beneath their feet.
The final verse is very clear as well and all too relatable. His mental state is fragile and (gossamer) thin, ready to break at the slightest provocation. A collection of mental problems are piling up, and he tries to use his therapists wisdom to reassure and heal himself, but he sees that he is on the edge of disaster. Noting in the final line that hits thoughts and physical functions of his mind are plummeting through a shattered safety net.

Conor Oberst – Barbary Coast (Later) Lyrics 9 years ago
I think the lyrics are " you can sell your wares, even if they're HOT". meaning stolen goods, which is OK because by the time they figure out they're stolen it's not known who to blame.

That last verse is beautifully sad.

Bright Eyes – Loose Leaves Lyrics 9 years ago
This song doesn't really come off as bubbly or happy as everyone else has been seeing it. It sort of has an optimistic vibe, sure, but it seems like the narrator is just coming to accept so many miserable things (apathy, depression, wasted time) while everything good in his life is all expressed to be in the past. It's like he's letting go of all the good things he is so certain area gone while coming into an era of complacency

Bright Eyes – Make War Lyrics 9 years ago
I think this song is usually viewed as a farewell song to a shitty girl who did all the damage to the relationship. But there's a few lines that seem to be Conor admitting his own faults. Mostly "retreating into the depths of his despair and blocking her out".

I've been in enough relationships where my depression has been a huge factor in the end and as hard as it is to accept blame for something I couldn't control, in retrospect you see your own flaws as something that you can't blame someone for.

On the other hand it could be a case where a significant other gives up on you which, although understandable, can leave you feeling betrayed like he does in this song

Bright Eyes – Soon You Will Be Leaving Your Man Lyrics 9 years ago
I would love to be the first comment on years. This song hit me hard tonight. I've been listening to it over and over with each sip of liquor. When I started it was a hopeful tune that sounded reassuring to the idea of the long haul that love can sometimes be. But as the drinks piled up I started to understand the intention of the lyrics. It's a hopeless melody of fooling yourself into believing you have a chance. Sometimes your heart and your mind disagree. This song presents a case of your heart begging and desperately believing in a possible love that your common sense knows isn't going to come to fruition.

I hear you loud and clear Conor.

Flobots – There's A War Going On For Your Mind Lyrics 12 years ago
The first half of the song has been pretty much analyzed by now, so I'll take the second half.

Professional wrestlers and vice presidents want you to believe them
-I think this is just a comment on how EVERYBODY is involved in politics these days, especially celebrities. Celebrity figures, like a wrestler, are all part of the political game, and are an important middleman in controlling the masses.

The desert sky is their blue screen
They superimpose explosions
-I guess this line is just commenting on the way the government can coerce the entire country to go to war, even when there is no reason to fight. The government is superimposing explosions, or creating false conflicts in a faraway place and we are believing every word about it they tell us.

They shout at you
"Pay no attention to the men behind the barbed curtain
-This is a reference to Guantanamo Bay and other prisoners of war that the public is better off pretending don't exist, and the government would rather have us ignore their existence.

Nor the craters beneath the draped flags
Those hoods are there for your protection
And meteors these days are the size of corpses"
-Opposite the men behind the barbed curtain (the "enemies"), are our own troops, who are draped in an American flag when they return to their homeland in a casket. The government wants us to not only ignore the mistreatment of our "enemies", but they seek to hide the damage being done to our own side. They hide the dead under draped flags and cover it up as something else, in this case they are claiming that these are all just "corpse sized meteors".

Like we've all concluded, the song is all about government secrets and control over what we see through the media.

The Strokes – One Way Trigger Lyrics 12 years ago
The song seems to be about a guy who's already settled down (he's already got the job, friend, home, and dog), but is still trying to juggle all that with his dream, whatever that may be. On top of all this, the girl he's with doesn't seem to love him any longer. He seems to be saying that the only reason he agreed to settle down was because of his love for that girl, but now he's realizing it was all just "Summer lies". When she finally catches him leaving, he gives her his reason and asks her to give him an answer, but he gets tired of waiting.

Taking Back Sunday – I Am Fred Astaire Lyrics 12 years ago
The Fred Astaire reference is probably just an allegory for the artful dance he makes out of destroying whatever relationships he's in. He's choreographed every move and every word to the point where he seems to be practically emotionally disconnected to the fights, and he's just following a dance. The last lines (it used to take so much more, I used to too) sort of seems to imply that, these days, he's readily given up on trying to care anymore and just dances his way through his problems.

People In Planes – Light For The Deadvine Lyrics 12 years ago
It kinda just sounds like he's seeing someone for the first time in a long while (my, you have grown), and he sees how pathetic that person's life has become (you, left alone). The rest of the song it sounds like he's trying to convince this person that they need him, and they should leave with him, but they continue to refuse his offer.
