| Oasis – Let's All Make Believe Lyrics

To me, it's about a band where the relationships between its members are cracking under the surface, but where the song writer is frustrated with no one willing to be open to admitting their problems to each other. The writer is now pleading to the other members that if they can't at least be as good friends as they once were, then at least it's best to maintain a facade that they still are because the sum of their parts is greater than them being individuals alone in terms of public perception ("...that all mankind's gonna feed our brother"), where media perception is otherwise ready to cut them down to size (pretty much the entire third verse), and that if they stick together "...in the end we'll all grow old" (not "...grow up" as the lyric contributor states here).
I don't think it's a coincidence that this was written in 1998 between the "Be Here Now" and "Standing on the Shoulder of Giants" albums, when the inevitable UK media backlash was now in full swing and that in hindsight background cracks in the Oasis lineup was now starting to appear, eventually resulting in the departure of both Bonehead & Guigsy during the SOTSOG recordings.
As a song, IMO for a band that was known for having strong B-sides, this is possibly their best after "The Masterplan" but unlike The Masterplan, few outside of Oasis fan circles are seemingly aware of it. It's also perhaps a final bridge between their Britpop foundations and their more psychedelic & electronic music direction from the early 00's onwards - but unlike many of their previous songs that emphasised a positive outlook on life, this was much more bleaker/sober in looking to deal with reality. A comedown on the high of the previous few years. It's a shame that this was relegated to being a B-Side of "Go Let It Out", it deserved better. |

To me this is about the breakdown point of a long-term relationship, likely a marriage, that the protagonist has been holding out for some time that the writing hasn't been on the wall for this relationship to completely collapse.
Looking deeper, it would seem that the protagonist has inevitably developed a love/hate relationship with their partner, complicated by varying factors like "...being uncertain of your love", how their partner seems to have no social circle outside of their family, is somewhat doubtful or in denial of the strength of the relationship themselves, and the most awkward (and a very common reason in real life) being the involvement of what is presumably their children for whom they've likely stuck together for the sake of, with an opportunity that hopefully at some point in the future the relationship can strengthen again - but it's now reached the point of no return in terms of separating and that neither have any need now to live "...this life of masquerade". As the title sums up, the party's over.
Overall it's probably the strongest song on Talk Talk's debut album and it's one of those songs that I wished that it had been recorded later around the time "The Colour Of Spring" was being made, where there would have been much less reliance on synths and could have had included a choir or some element of an orchestral feel, especially in the second half of the song when the tone changes. |

It's not just a gentle ballad about love but also about the tribulations of being in a metal band that's touring on the road, where the songwriter is expressing the toll that this is all having on his health. The acoustic guitar sets the mood just right, the vocal harmonies are great and the lyrics are very honest & open, not something you'd expect from a band of this genre. After the first time I heard this song I had tears rolling down my face - I'm surprised this isn't played more often on the "late night love" shows on my local FM radio station, especially as a wind-down song which this is perfect for. One of the greatest final tracks on an album IMO. |

The version of this song on "The Party's Over" album is quite weak and too synth heavy - there is a version of the song that was once on You Tube performed live by the band in Dortmund for German Television that was at least 20x better. |

It seems to me that the song could be one of two things, either a person who is going though a serious gambling addiction who is losing everything around him - his friends, his family, his faith, his health etc. but is convinced one more big gamble will sort it all out. And if not then he's done for. Another is possibly the leader of a tribe or group that is on the edge of defeat, preparing for one last attack against their foes. In both cases near the end of the song, they find out that after a period of redemption that their actions were either needless or they finally understood the consequences of those people around them, "hate" being a metaphor for either the addiction or the simple irrational tribalism. |

A kind of counter-ambition song, where the writer is simply content with what they have in life and sees no need to be burdened by the weight of additional responsibilities or tasks in their life and not have to make excuses for doing so, summed up by "I'm just content to relax, than drown within myself" line. The song really plays off the parts of the lyrics that sound like they could come from a motivational poster in a gym backed by a quite guitar, organ and rumbling kettle drum, into the "relax" lyrics that unleashes a mass of noise. |
