I agree with the other comment. I also think this song is making fun of rap music. I'm not some huge Prince fan, or a Prince music expert... So, my interpretation is probably incorrect, but this is what I get from these lyrics.. Pop guns and weed? Brother please! (Making fun of the violence Gangsta rap music, that took rise, at the time.) We're too wise for now, since {too wise for non-sense play on words maybe?} the other 90's was better suited for that biz Back when Dick was fuckin' Liz (Richard and Elizabeth were together during the 70's. Maybe he is saying, the "wild" stuff these rappers are talking about, has nothing on what he/others used to do back in the 70's.) Hooker, bitch and ho, I don't think so... ...A woman every day should be thanked Not disrespected, not raped, or spanked (Basically he's saying the way rap music talks about women is very disrespectful, and women should be treated with more respect.) Tennis shoes and caps, now that's phat Up until the day another want to laugh behind your back Sayin' we all look the same, huh (Rappers dress sloppy, create stereotypes. Hoodie, hoodlum type thing.) |

This is just my interpretation of this song, it is most likely wrong. But, this is what these lyrics have meant, to me. Shining star come into view (Let God into your life.) To shine its watchful light on you, yeah (Allow His grace to be showered over you.) Give you strength to carry on, yeah (The grace of the Holy Spirit will give you strength when you feel like you can't go on.) Born a man-child of the sun (Born of the Son of God. We are given new life through Christ.) I love inspirational funk songs! |
