Cherry Ghost – People Help The People Lyrics 11 years ago
This is one of my favourite songs, and it makes me sad that Birdy gets most of the credit for it when the original by Cherry Ghost is so incredible.
The second verse is breath-taking as it is so accurate, "In this world of little consequence". These days it is rare for people to think about what they are doing, and the impact their actions will have on our generation and generations to come (like global warming, for instance). They don't think their (often selfish) choices will affect anyone but themselves- but they are wrong as it is like a drop of water causing ripples in a lake.

Now, the most powerful line for me is "A thousand slowly dying sunsets" because it perfectly sums up the human race. Pretend our lives are a day, when we are born we are live a sunrise- young, beautiful and full of potential. As the sun climbs, we grow up and mature. When it reaches midday, we are adults at our happiest and in our "hay day" so to speak. Then as the sun slowly begins to descend, we grow older and wiser. Finally, as the sun sets we are at death's doors, so we can at last show our true colours and how much we fulfilled our true potential.

Anyway, it's a stunning song with a lovely meaning.

Taylor Swift – Safe and Sound Lyrics 11 years ago
This is definitely for Rue and/or Prim. I don't want to spoil anything, but this song is sort of hinting at what happens in the final book.

So I'll just write about what it means in relation to Rue.
I feel that it's about her struggle to survive and retain the innocence that comes with being a child, "All those shadows almost killed your light." This can be taken literally as the others trying to kill her, but I think it's really about them almost throwing her innocence away- the other tributes are quick to kill but Rue doesn't want to because she is young and pure.

The chorus has a very powerful meaning- at a glance it seems like Katniss just reassuring Rue that they've survived another day.But to me it's almost like a mother singing a lullaby to make their child fall asleep, which I feel is a much more fitting meaning. I think they based this song off of the lullaby in the book that Katniss sings to Rue, as the lyrics remind me of this. "The sun is going down," is possibly one of the most powerful lyrics in the song because I think it means that Rue's life is coming to an end, as she is dying. I think the chorus is Katniss reassuring Rue that she shouldn't be scared of dying, and that everything will be okay. "Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound," implies that when Rue is reborn (if you believe in that stuff), her next life will be better- her and Katniss may be able to meet again and become friends properly the next time around.

The rest of the lyrics are pretty self explanatory, but this is such a beautiful song. I adore the Civil Wars, and hope that they are getting the recognition that they deserve.

Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Follow You Into the Dark Lyrics 11 years ago
I think really there are two meanings to this song- the first being the literal one of someone promising they'll never leave their love. But the second I feel is so complex that I can't really properly explain it, but I'll give it a shot. I think it's about the journey we all go through of growing up, maturing and learning what the world is really like.

The first verse is when a person realizes for the first time that they will eventually die, and it's a difficult concept to come to terms with. But, "No blinding lights or tunnels to gates of white," is reassurance to the person that death isn't as scary as it may seem. Everyone goes through the same thing, so that person is no exception and won't be alone.

The second verse is when the person becomes an adult, and is thrown into the world and learns what it's really like. Perhaps it is much more brutal than they expected because of all the rules, and the person's hopes and dreams are crushed by the harsh reality. It is like the person's innocence is being crushed by everyone else's experience (like Charles Dicken's theory of innocence and experience), so the person is forced to conform. But the lyrics, "I held my tongue," implies the person is reluctant to conform, as they don't want to become like everyone else.

In the final verse the person is very old, at the doors of death. They have seen the ways of the world, and are tired of watching people lose their innocence and gain experience. They don't want to see it anymore as too many people's dreams have been crushed, and so they welcome death. They are ready to go, so they no longer have the same irrational fear that they had once when they were young- now they know better. The lyrics, "The time for sleep is now, but it's nothing to cry about," supports this, as the person is no longer sad about dying and is ready to take the same journey that everyone else must one day take.

...A bit long I know, but this is my favourite song ever.

Florence + the Machine – Heartlines Lyrics 11 years ago
I went to see her live and she played this, beforehand I hadn't listened to it much but she said she wrote it when she was on tour and missed her family and friends. After the gig I listened to it properly, and it has a beautiful message. I think that it's telling you to follow your heart and live your dreams, but don't forget your loved ones who helped your dreams become reality.

Florence + the Machine – Breaking Down Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this song is about death and how it always lies in wait, as a child you fear it but as you become old you accept it. The lyrics, "I think I'm breaking down again," imply she is struggling to accept the concept that death cannot be avoided, and so she runs blindly from it. But, as she grows older she sees it is always in wait until eventually she is very old and welcomes it's embrace. In the final verse the lyrics, "My old familiar friend comes and lies down next to me," shows she's finally stopped running, and realizes there was nothing to fear all along. Perhaps the final chorus is her regretting that she wasted her time running and fearing the unknown, when she could have had a better life... But that's just the story I think the song is telling, probably not the real meaning but ah well.
