Love of mine
Someday you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark

No blinding light
Or tunnels, to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark

If Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

In Catholic school, as vicious as Roman rule
I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black
And I held my tongue as she told me
"Son, fear is the heart of love," so I never went back

And if Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

You and me have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
But it's nothing to cry about
'Cause we'll hold each other soon
In the blackest of rooms

And if Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

Then I'll follow you into the dark

    My Interpretation

I think really there are two meanings to this song- the first being the literal one of someone promising they'll never leave their love. But the second I feel is so complex that I can't really properly explain it, but I'll give it a shot. I think it's about the journey we all go through of growing up, maturing and learning what the world is really like.

The first verse is when a person realizes for the first time that they will eventually die, and it's a difficult concept to come to terms with. But, "No blinding lights or tunnels to gates of white," is reassurance to the person that death isn't as scary as it may seem. Everyone goes through the same thing, so that person is no exception and won't be alone.

The second verse is when the person becomes an adult, and is thrown into the world and learns what it's really like. Perhaps it is much more brutal than they expected because of all the rules, and the person's hopes and dreams are crushed by the harsh reality. It is like the person's innocence is being crushed by everyone else's experience (like Charles Dicken's theory of innocence and experience), so the person is forced to conform. But the lyrics, "I held my tongue," implies the person is reluctant to conform, as they don't want to become like everyone else.

In the final verse the person is very old, at the doors of death. They have seen the ways of the world, and are tired of watching people lose their innocence and gain experience. They don't want to see it anymore as too many people's dreams have been crushed, and so they welcome death. They are ready to go, so they no longer have the same irrational fear that they had once when they were young- now they know better. The lyrics, "The time for sleep is now, but it's nothing to cry about," supports this, as the person is no longer sad about dying and is ready to take the same journey that everyone else must one day take.

...A bit long I know, but this is my favourite song ever.

Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
