Hayden – In September Lyrics 9 years ago
Agree with other interpretations. This song could have been written about my ex girlfriend and I. She was insecure and I was very in love with her. Anytime she felt threatened she turned outside of the relationship looking for external validation to demonstrate to me exactly how much everyone liked her and how she didn't actually need to ever deal with the root causes of her insecurity. It was excruciating and ultimately an impossible situation for me, always wondering why attention from people who were not as close to her was preferable to what I had to offer. "tell me the way they are with you, tell me exactly what to do." Ouch Hayden.

The Mountain Goats – Pure Love Lyrics 11 years ago
This song is about the terrifying moment when a dysfunctional relationship ends badly and you lay awake at night anxious considering the ways in which the other person might try to get back at you. You're powerless since you've given up all the emotional leverage you've ever had over them and what you DID have was toxic to begin with.

The little quaver in JD's voice when he says "Heey, what are you doing my love?" is the moment you realize they are gonna rage right through you and never look back. The speaker is desperately trying to communicate that the emoional violence serves no purpose anymore. Yikes. I've been here and it's nerve wracking.

The Mountain Goats – Milk Song Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this song is about how hard it is to let go of someone once a relationship is over. It's so easy to get hung up on keeping track of all the little injuries between people. He sees vestiges of the person in the sky, like a ghost because he's having trouble just moving on. Sometimes the actual act of moving on involves sacrificing something we think is important or has a quantifiable value (200 Kroners for the answering machine) but will be offset by the inevitable freeness that comes with giving it up.

Also, I was at my aunt's house this winter for Christmas in the interior of British Columbia and noticed how easy it is to see images against an evenly cloudy, milk white sky in winter because all of the light is filtered and the sky is just slightly darker than light sources. It looks like there are ghosts against a screen.

That's my favourite part. It's so sneering because he knows it's wrong.

OMG I thought I was the only one who thought that. In my head, it's ginger tea with honey.
